Science Week

What a week Science Week was! Led by the Science and Technology Team, numerous events were planned to celebrate Science.

Students participated in three different Science activities on the Wednesday getting us off to a great start. Many of our Year 5/6 students volunteered to either lead or assistant with the running of these activities. For much of this term our student leaders have been learning and practising how best to deliver their lesson and on the day were ably assisted by many other students.

These young people were a credit to themselves and our school. With their help the F-2 students completed three activities - parachutes, magnets and circuits and the 3-6 students looked at chemical science featuring measuring pH levels, foaming and popping science. A highlight was the sherbet making and each student took home a small sample - although I'm not sure how many actually made it home!

Thursday the students went to an incursion run by Jollybops who presented "Science with an Aboriginal Perspective - Flight, Sound and Fire".

This show looked at the scientific principles behind some of the great inventions and environmental understandings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Students discovered the science behind the returning Boomerang, learnt about the science of sound and the Didgeridoo (Yidaki) and about the inventions of one of the great Aboriginal Scientists and leaders David Unaipon (The Face of the $50 note) to name a few.

The grand finale was on Friday which was our Science Expo. Students had been working hard to create their exhibit to showcase their science learning. At some displays students enthusiastically demonstrated and explained the science behind their exhibit. I think the Year 5s were so keen they used up all their demo equipment by lunchtime and teachers had to make a dash for the supermarket! All classes, including the kindergarten visited during the day and parents were then invited to attend from 3pm onwards. We were very grateful to the Community Network and our Principals who organised a sausage sizzle. With the arctic winds and temperatures the sausages warmed hands and stomachs!

A big thank you goes out to everyone who organised, planned, rehearsed for and participated in Science Week. We hope the whole community enjoyed it!
