E-Sports Club: Mario Kart Tournament
On September 8 Nazareth College students in Years 7 and 8 were privileged to attend an e-Sports Mario Kart Tournament. The event was hosted by Silverton Primary School and attended by students in Years 5 to 8 from various schools. The level of competition was very high, and the atmosphere was buzzing with excitement and engine noises. Whilst we did not make it into the Top 4 for either the Upper or Lower Brackets, two of our teams did manage to make it into Top 8 of the Upper Bracket. Nonetheless, well done to all our competitors for their endeavour and positive sportsmanship.
Thank-you to Silverton Primary School and Jason Tang for organising and hosting this great event for the students. Please take a look at a few of the photos from the event below.

Aerobics National Championships
At the end of Term 3 five Nazareth students, from across Years 7 to 11, competed at the Aerobics National Championships on the Gold Coast. It was a fantastic achievement for these students to qualify for the National competition and a great reward to be able to showcase their routine and compete on the Gold Coast stage. Jenna Andrikopoulos (Year 11) and Julia Mali (Year 10) placed 3rd in Australia in the Division B Upper Secondary division. Out of 15 teams in the Division A Lower Secondary division, Alexandra Surenian (Year 8), Lillie Esmonde (Year 8) and Larissa Pitruzzello (Year 7) placed 6th nationally. A huge well done to all students who competed at the Aerobics National Championships! We are looking forward to the 2024 season and hope to see many new students join the Aerobics and Aerodance squad.
Miss Georgie Abela
Aerobics Coach
During the final week of the third school term, Lillie, Larissa, Alexandra, Julia, and myself embarked on a trip to the sunny Gold Coast to participate in the National Aerobics competition. We had previously secured our spots at Nationals by excelling at the state level. Our three-day stay was a perfect blend of soaking up the sun and rigorous competition preparation. Upon our arrival on Thursday, we promptly headed to our Airbnb, where we unpacked and readied ourselves for an evening dinner outing. Following a satisfying meal, we made a quick trip to the grocery store to stock up on energising foods to prepare for the competition.
Bright and early on Friday morning, we woke up, enjoyed a hearty breakfast, and readied ourselves for Julia and my performance. Nervous anticipation filled the air as we went through our warm-up routine, but in the end, we secured an impressive 3rd place. After returning from the competition, we decided to spend a few hours at Surfers Paradise Beach, relishing the coastal beauty. Later that evening, we attended the aerobics party held at the competition venue, though the five of us eventually left early due to a low turnout. We enjoyed the use of the photobooth on offer. We turned in early that night, as we had an early start scheduled for 6.45 am to leave the house at 8.30 am.
The following day, we returned to the competition venue for Larissa, Lillie, and Alexandra's performances, which resulted in a 6th-place finish. Without wasting any time after the awards ceremony, we headed straight to the airport for our flight back to Melbourne, where we touched down at 6.00 pm.

These five Nazareth students did us proud and I am most grateful for all the hard work that Georgie the coach had put into the routines to get them this far and organising the trip. During the short time we were in the Gold Coast we were able to see the Sunshine Coast beach and Broad beach when we were out at dinner at La Porchetta. The school was very generous for supporting these students and their expenses for the trip. It is certainly a great way to keep fit and healthy and would be great to see more student participate in this sport.

Soccer Schools Cup
On Wednesday 23 August Nazareth College participated in the Invitational Soccer Schools Cup hosted by St John’s College in Dandenong.
Nazareth was represented by a Years 7-8 Boys Team, a Years 9-10 Girls Team and a Years 9-10 Boys Team. The games were held on smaller pitches with 9 a side in a lightning premiership schedule.
The 7-8 Boys, coached by Harry Bingham who runs the School of Excellence, reached the semi-finals but sadly were defeated in a close game by Bentleigh Secondary College.
The 9-10 Boys made the final after an unbelievable win against Forest Hill College in the semi-final, down 0-1 for most of the match and then win 3-1. In the final, unfortunately, they were not able to hit the back of the net, although they had their chances, and lost 0-2 in the final, again to Bentleigh Secondary College.
The 9-10 Girls, coached by professional Peter Yang and inspired by the Matildas (no doubt), took on St John’s in a series of games in which our girls reigned supreme and brought home the Cup. The Girls team was ecstatic with the win.
All in all, it was a great day of football which provided all the emotions for our players; from the come from behind wins, the heartache of losing and joy of winning, we experienced all that is the beautiful game.
Health & Physical Education (HPE) Week
HPE WEEK ran this year at Nazareth College in the second last week of Term 3, from 4 – 8 September, with the focus of reminding the students to make healthy choices in nutrition and having fun in physical activity. Monday’s focus was healthy eating, and students were offered free fruit at recess and lunch with many students stating that it was the juiciest fruit they had ever had, key is to source from great local and seasonal suppliers. The Weights room and Cardio rooms were also opened up for students to have a workout. Tuesday was a rest day.
Wednesday’s focus was aimed at having the most fun, with students given the opportunity to do rock climbing and race a friend through the inflatable obstacle course THE WILD ONE. These two activities were very popular but the addition of the THE WILD ONE was a real winner as it tested students physically but was so enjoyable most students got to the end laughing due to the spills and thrills involved.
Thursday’s event was the Basketball 3-point shoot won by Nathan Gebremeskel who shot five successful 3 pointers in the 30 seconds time limit.
The week culminated in the annual Staff versus Year 12 Dodgeball Game in the GYM, surrounded by students who would all attest to possibly the greatest demonstration of skill and mastery the game has ever seen. That the staff won so comprehensively, despite the strength of the Year 12 Cohort, speaks something of the calibre of athlete that walks amongst us. The staff team comprised of Mr J Cowan, Ms R Bilu, Mr M Berryman, Mr C Chan, Ms O Giblin and Mr A Moore (not wearing his glasses), was like a singular organism which although had never previously been on the court together, united to form something between Voltron and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (shout out to all those who watched these cartoons in the 80s). A big thank you to all the HPE staff who gave up recesses and lunches to run and supervise the activities. It certainly was an enjoyable week!
