Learning Diversity at Mazenod College: Supporting Every Learner’s Success

At Mazenod College, we are deeply committed to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student can flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. The Learning Diversity team plays a vital role in ensuring that boys with diverse learning needs are understood, supported, and equipped to thrive. This work reflects the College’s broader philosophy of nurturing each young man’s potential through high expectations, affirming relationships, and evidence-based teaching practices.

At Mazenod College, we provide targeted support through individualised plans, small-group programs, and structured interventions. These programs and interventions delivered by skilled specialist teachers, psychologists and learning support officers focus on strengthening core skills in the areas of literacy, numeracy, organisation, social skills and assessment readiness. The team works alongside classroom teachers and Pastoral leaders to ensure students can confidently access all areas of life at Mazenod College in a meaningful way.

Students often describe the Penola Centre as a welcoming space where they can receive personalised guidance, access time out to regulate, build confidence, and develop essential skills for school success. Programs such as Literacy Support in Years 7 and 8 offer explicit instruction in reading fluency, comprehension and written expression. Corrective Reading, a Tier 3 Intervention, provides targeted support in reading skills for a small group of students. Numeracy Support focuses on underpinning basic mathematical skills to enable the students to access the curriculum. In addition, the option for students to reduce their subject load to access support and guidance in the Penola Centre allows students to develop their ability to manage the requirements of their learning programs fostering both competence and connection.

One vital aspect of supporting students with learning needs is their access to, and use of, special exam provisions, or arrangements.

Why VCAA Special Examination Provisions Matter

For senior students undertaking VCE studies, learning challenges, disabilities, illnesses, or other circumstances may impact their ability to demonstrate what they know under standard exam conditions. The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) provide Special Examination Arrangements (SEA) to ensure equity and fair access for these students.

These provisions can include rest breaks, extra working time, separate rooms, assistive technology, readers, or scribes. They do not change the academic expectations; instead, they level the playing field by reducing barriers that may otherwise disadvantage students in timed assessments.

The VCAA assesses each application individually, relying on school-based evidence and professional assessments. Schools play a crucial role in identifying students, gathering evidence, and submitting applications on their behalf. This ensures that support begins well before exams through classroom adjustments and School-Based Assessment provisions creating a consistent and documented pathway toward a successful VCE experience.

How Mazenod College Supports the Process

At Mazenod College, the Learning Diversity team works closely with students, parents, teachers, and external professionals to identify needs early and implement appropriate supports from Year 7. Many students are already known to the team through literacy programs, homework assistance sessions, and ongoing classroom adjustments, making the transition to VCAA applications smooth and well-supported.

We ensure that all evidence is collected thoroughly, throughout a student's time at the college and that provisions are aligned with the student’s functional needs, not just diagnostic labels. This ensures fairness, consistency, and the likelihood of VCAA approval when needed.

A Shared Commitment to Student Wellbeing and Success

Special Examination Provisions are not “shortcuts” or “advantages” they are equitable adjustments that allow students to demonstrate their true capabilities. The student still meets all assessment outcomes and VCE requirements; the provisions simply remove unnecessary barriers created by illness, disability, or significant hardship.

Together, our Learning Diversity team, teaching staff, and families form a strong network of advocacy and care. By recognising individual needs early, supporting students consistently, and utilising VCAA provisions where appropriate, Mazenod College continues to uphold its mission of empowering every young man to achieve his personal best.
