GRIP Student Leadership Conference

Last week Mrs Anderson and I were privileged to attend the GRIP Student Leadership Conference at the Melbourne Convention Centre with our year 6 House Captains.  The conference theme was, "I Accept The Challenge."

Along with student leaders from schools across the State, they engaged in activities that promoted deepening their understanding of leadership.  They interacted with student leaders from other schools on the topics of:

  • the role of a leader,
  • the qualities leaders demonstrate
  • how to act like a leader and
  • how to think like a leader.

An example of thinking like a leader was a discussion activity, where they were tasked with discussing an example of serving the needs of others.

Integrity was noted as a highly valued attribute of a leader and acting like a leader was covered in activities relating to integrity.

Student leaders came away with a clear vision, a solid understanding and dozens of ideas for their time as a leader. The conference's main message was, that you don't need a badge to be a leader, all students play an important leadership role in the school and this was echoed in the school captain's speeches at assembly.

One last take away that we felt we could do regularly at school, particularly during assemblies, related to our school values...

Many thanks to our PFA who funded the students to attend this conference.  It really is a valuable experience for our student leaders and also highlights the importance of  the work of our PFA.

As part of our Anzac Day commemorations, we would like to honour family members and loved ones who have served in the Australian and New Zealand Armed Forces.

We invite students to fill in the attached slip of paper with the details of a family member or someone special they would like to honour. This may include relatives or family friends who served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or other service organisations.

If you would like to participate, please help your child complete the slip that can be downloaded below with the following information:

  • Name of the person who served
  • Relationship to the student (e.g., great-grandfather, aunt, family friend)
  • Any additional information you would like to share (optional)

These names will be used as part of our Anzac Day remembrance to respectfully acknowledge those who served and sacrificed.

Please return the completed slip to school by Friday 24th April, as they will be presented during assembly on Monday the 27th April.

Thank you for helping us honour and remember those who have served.

Lest We Forget.

Pedestrian Safety and your input

I have received the following letter from Banyule Council regarding safety concerns for our families creating a shortcut to and from Green Street.

Dear Ivanhoe Primary School,

We have recently received community concerns regarding parents accessing No. 23 Green Street, Ivanhoe, via the Tate Street laneway.

As you may be aware, No. 23 Green Street is private property and is currently protected by wire mesh fencing to ensure that pedestrians do not enter the property whilst it is currently under construction.

It has been noted that at times, parents are moving this protective fencing to enter the property and exit onto Green Street as a shortcut instead of utilising the existing Green Street Reserve pedestrian facilities. This additionally carries the risk of the fence falling onto persons/ vehicles using the laneway outside of these times.

We would kindly ask you to remind parents to please not move this fencing and instead use the existing pedestrian infrastructure provided in the area.

By ensuring that pedestrians are using the correct facilities, we can ensure that school children are safely walking to and from school together.

Should you have any queries regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact Matthew Scutella Traffic and Transport Banyule City Council T  +61 3 9242 346

Banyule City Council is interested in understanding how safe you feel on your journey to school and what might make it easier.

We are reaching out to teachers, guardians, and students to participate in this short online survey to share your experiences.

Your input will help Council make informed decisions and achieve positive outcomes to support you and the school.

New Staff

School Nurse

We are pleased to welcome Marsha Gotsalks to the administration and Education Support Team from the start of Term 2. Marsha will be working from 11:00am – 3:00pm each day in the role of School Nurse.

We are excited about this extension to our admin team and I’d like to thank both Rekha and Francine for covering this duty so well up to now.

Classroom Teachers

We are pleased to welcome two new teachers to IPS.  Tate Anderson is a highly experienced teacher who will be joining us at the start of term 2 to replace Mollie Easton as classroom teacher for 2E  whilst she takes family leave.

Also joining us from the start of term 2, is Amanada Matlen, another very experienced teacher.  She will be sharing the classroom teaching for 4B on Thursdays and Fridays with Ms Blanas to replace Lowri Belson who has picked up a full time position at Brunswick North Primary School.

Whilst Rotem Gam is not new to the school, she will commence full time classroom teaching in 2RT whilst Tracy Kahlefeldt leaves to have her baby.

Welcome to our new staff!

Finally

As term 1 concludes, I'd like to thank you for your continued support and hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable break over the holidays.
