From the Leadership Team

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We hope you had a wonderful break with your child/ren, and were able to enjoy some of the beautiful sunny weather. We have loved welcoming the students back to school, and have enjoyed hearing all of the wonderful stories from the children from their holidays.
It was so lovely to walk through the classes this week and see the children reconnecting with their friends. Term 2 is going to be another busy term for our school, and we are looking forward to the exciting events, and all of the learning that will take place.
Term Overviews
Term 2 Curriculum Overviews will be shared by class teachers this week. Overviews are posted on the classroom Class Dojo, and are a wonderful opportunity for you to have a look at the learning that is happening in your child's class. If you have any questions regarding the learning, please don't hesitate to make contact with your child's teacher to discuss.
Mother's Day Stall
Our Mother's Day stall is happening next week. Students will be visiting the stall on Tuesday or Wednesday. Class teachers will let you know which day your child's class will visit the stall. There will be gifts ranging from $1-$7 for the children to purchase.
Please send money on the day they are visiting, and if possible please send a small bag for them to carry their gift home.
Thank you to our community members who have kindly volunteered their time to help us run the stall.
Open Afternoon / Preschool Stay and Play
Next week we will be opening our learning spaces on Tuesday afternoon between 2:00pm and 3:00pm, and we warmly invite you to come for a visit and see your child/ren's classroom.
Our Term 2 open day is an informal opportunity for your child to be the tour guide, and show you their class. They may like to show a piece of work, share an activity, play a game, read a story or do a puzzle with you. If your child would normally be in Japanese or Technologies during this time, they will share this learning area, rather than their regular classroom. We hope to see you there.
Our Preschool families are warmly invited to attend a 'Stay and Play' session on Monday May 4th (Week 2) from 9:00am -10:00am. Come along, spend some time with your child, and enjoy exploring our learning environment together. We look forward to seeing you there and sharing in the fun.
Road Cycle Safety Centre
This term Rooms 6, 7, and 8 will visit the Road Cycle Safety Centre in Tea Tree Gully.
The centre makes learning how to ride a bike fun for children of all ages. The enclosed space has a mini-road network which gives children a real-life experience in using crossings, and giving way to others as they learn to ride bikes in a safe and controlled environment.
Students will learn about:
Road crossings
Working traffic lights
Entering and exiting roundabouts
Recognising traffic signs and line markings
Navigating how to ride near gutters
We are seeking support from our volunteers with this excursion. If you have completed volunteer training and are able to walk with classes to/from the event, could you please let your child's teacher know. Thank you!
Uniform Update
As we move into Term 2, we begin to see the chilly weather start to set in- particularly in the mornings before school. We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that we have Modbury School beanies for sale, which you can order via the QkR! app. Beanies can be worn in the place of school hats during Term 2.
It is also a good opportunity to make sure that school jumpers are labelled with your child/ren's name, as this makes it easier to return them if they are lost.
Playground Updates
We’re excited to share that we now have colourful benches installed near our mosaic tables! These vibrant benches make the area more inviting and comfortable, creating a welcoming space for children and families to relax and enjoy creative time together, or for children to sit and talk while they have their recess and lunch breaks. We hope you enjoy this cheerful new addition to our outdoor area.
Swing Safety
We have recently reviewed how our students use the swing and, to ensure everyone’s safety, we have made some changes to our 'Using the Swing' expectations. This week classes have been busy learning the new expectations, with the key focus being that: children must always sit down while riding the swing, only one child can be on the swing at a time, and only one person should be pushing at a time. These updated expectations help us keep the play space safe and enjoyable for everyone. Thank you for your understanding and support as we continue to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of all students. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak with a staff member
Emergency Procedures
At Modbury School P-6, the safety and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities. Regular emergency practice drills are a crucial component of our Work Health and Safety (WHS) strategy. These drills prepare everyone to respond swiftly and effectively in the event of an emergency, such as a fire or natural disaster. By practising these procedures, we ensure that our school community is well-equipped to handle unexpected situations, minimising risks and enhancing overall safety. This term we will continue to practice our evacuation and invacuation drills. This term we will practice our off-site evacuation drill.
National Volunteers Week
National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers. Volunteers contribute to the education sector in many ways, from reading in class to helping on excursions. Our volunteers contribute thousands of hours to our schools, preschools and children’s centres.
In 2026, National Volunteer Week will be held from the 18th to the 24th of May. This special event provides an opportunity to highlight the important role of volunteers in our schools, preschools and children’s centres, and invites people not currently volunteering to give it a go.
If you have always loved the idea of volunteering in our school - now is the perfect time to register with us! We are hosting volunteer training and induction sessions each term, and would love to have you join us in supporting our children. Our next session will be held on May 7th- Week 2 Thursday.
Book Week 2026
The 2026 Children's Book Week theme is Symphony of Stories! This theme represents various elements (different genres, voices, and characters) uniting to form one harmonious whole, much like a musical symphony. In Term 3, we will celebrate Book Week and encourage our students to dive into stories that inspire curiosity and wonder. Reading is not just a pastime; it's a gateway to understanding the world and ourselves.
