Book Week

One of the highlights of the school year is coming up next week, Book Week! On Monday will be holding our annual Book Week Parade which will occur in the VPS Stadium. All students are encouraged to dress up as a character from a book. Students can be as creative as they like with their costumes. Using items from around the home or borrowing items from others can be a great way to create something without having to buy something new. Parents and younger siblings are welcome to attend the parade.

During Book Week the students will be completing activities in their classroom to celebrate the week.

Foundation – Throughout the week, the Foundation students are going to rotate through the different classrooms and learn about a different author in each one. The Kinder students are also coming up to join the Foundation students and will enjoy a book and an activity together.

Grade 1 – For Book Week, the Grade 1 students will be writing a book review on their favourite book as well as completing a Book Week themed wordsearch and character profile. They will be reading 'Room on a Broom' and completing a craft activity on it.

Grade 2 – The Grade 2 students will be writing about their favourite book characters, creating book reviews for others to read and completing an activity about the well-known text, Rainbow Fish.

Grade 3 – Grade 3 are comparing and contrasting two of the books by Michael Wagner, 'Why I Love Summer' and 'Why I love Football'. They are also creating a new front cover for their favourite book and making a wanted poster for a character from a book of their choice.

Grade 4 - For Book Week, the Grade 4s are using the books of Michael Wagner as mentor texts and exploring his writing style, including how he supports his statements and what he does to create an engaging introduction and conclusion. The will be reading the CBA shortlisted books and discussing what makes them engaging.

Grade 5 - The Grade 5 students will be sharing their understanding of their favourite texts and will be using an activity grid to select how they present their information. Additionally, they will also be creating some character art and writing a book review.

Grade 6 - During the Library sessions, the Grade 6 students will be completing a scavenger hunt in which they learn about and identify different books. In class, they will be creating a series of puzzles using that explore themes and genres, and sharing these puzzles so that others can complete them.

MS Readathon

This year Vermont Primary School is participating in the MS Readathon. The MS Readathon is a fundraiser which has been supporting people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for 45 years. It aims to bring together the enjoyment of reading and the inspiration of creating a difference in the lives of people living with MS. The MS Readathon runs for the month of August.

Vermont Primary has over 80 students signed up and has raised over $500. It would be good to keep on adding to this total. If you would like your child to participate in the MS Readathon and represent Vermont Primary School, you can register your child by simply heading to the Readathon website: https://www.msreadathon.org.au/join/VermontPrimarySchool

 Select ‘Register’

- Click ‘My children to read’

- Fill in the contact details of a parent/guardian

- Enter your child’s details and add Vermont Primary School

- Follow prompts until registration is complete.

**A reminder to not write your child’s surname. Their first name, or first name and surname initial, and their grade is all that is required (e.g. Jimmy S 4JS).

Writing Challenge

If your child enjoys their writing and is keen to write for enjoyment at home, below is a prompt that you could ask your child to write about.

You get to change the school uniform. What would you make everyone wear and why?

Comprehension Question

This fortnight’s questions are:

  • What characters change in your book? How?
  • Is the setting realistic? Could there be a real place like the setting described in your book?
