Learning and Teaching

Dear LPS families and friends,

We have had a wonderful week of learning, growth and excitement around the school. This week I'm focusing on those 'extra' activities that add to the experience and positive memories of being at School.

Mighty Matildas

Come the weekend and our Mighty Matildas will finish their 2023 World Cup Campaign.

Whether they win or lose their 3rd place playoff is almost irrelevant. They have shown us what is possible when you dare to dream. The Matildas have, as our students so beautifully stated in our video 'entertained us, excited us, motivated us and inspired us'. They have become 'our Mighty Matildas'. They have brought us together and shown girls and boys across the nation what hard work, dedication, discipline, teamwork and most importantly, belief, can achieve. The phrase ‘If you can see it, you can be it’, rings so true here.  We now have a generation of young girls who believe that one day, if they want it, they could be the next player for the Matildas. This was made clear to me yesterday when I was on yard duty and witnessed a huge proportion of our students playing soccer, in fact, the most in my entire 20 years at LPS.  On that, if your child brings a soccer ball to school, please name it!

Our Respectful Relationships program aims to promote respect and gender equality and help students learn how to build healthy relationships. Importantly, it prepares students to face challenges by developing problem-solving skills and building resilience and confidence. These are all qualities exemplified by the Matildas over the past month and they have personified what we are seeking to achieve. Respectful relationships go hand in hand with high performance in both schools and the modern workforce.

Book Week

Each year since 1945 the Children's Book Council of Australia has brought children and books together across Australia through Book Week. This year Book Week is being celebrated from Saturday, 19 August to Friday, 25 August and the theme is

READ, GROW, INSPIRE

The Rowville Lions Club has sourced and very generously donated enough books so our students can select and take home two brand-new books.   The Lions Club recognises the importance of reading and the resultant positive impacts so are helping schools celebrate Book Week with this thoughtful act.  On Thursday, 24th, our students will have the opportunity to browse and select two books to take home and enjoy.  We thank the Lions Club for supporting our students and school.

On Friday, 25th, we invite our students to dress up as their favourite book characters.  I look forward to seeing the wonderful costumes and wonder whether we'll see some students dressed up as Matildas players as they have been 'inspired' by them recently.

NBA Math Hoops

On Thursday, 15 of our year 6 students competed in the NBA Math Hoops competition. Below is a recount from three of our students who competed.

Hi this is Kye, Lachie and Flynn and we will be sharing our experience at North Melbourne Football Club, where we competed in NBA Math Hoops. Math Hoops is a board game using statistics, maths and basketball knowledge. Before the competition commenced, we got to watch the North Melbourne players train on the ground. Then we got called into the basketball court where we played Math Hoops and were given a free Maths Hoops top which you can see in the photo below. We then drafted our players based on their statistics. The competition then started, we won every game in the first 3 rounds then we advanced to the knockout round where we won by 10 points. The next game we played was against last year's champions who advanced to New York and we lost by 5 pts and finished top 4 in the state.

Our favourite part of the day was improving our maths and meeting new friends. Thanks to Miss Emonson for organising this opportunity for us and Mrs Sekuloski also for coming on the day.

Have a wonderful weekend,
