Please Remove Applications from iPads
It has come to our attention that two applications that we have previously been using at Rangeview - Word Cookies! and Wordscapes, now have had a function added, allowing students to join a chat with other users. Whilst our school EDUSTAR blocks this from being possible during school hours, the applications if used at home, allow users to take part in these chats.
We request that both applications be deleted from the iPad to ensure the safety of students. Please speak to your child's classroom teacher if you require any assistance.
Maths Talks
Maths Talks are a wonderful way to engage students in Mathematical thinking whilst they develop computational fluency. They are a short (5-10 minute) task used to launch Mathematics lessons. Hand Signals are taught to students and used to respond to the image/ task posed. These signals are the same in many countries around the world that use Maths Talks. Students develop oral (Mathematical) language and understanding, whilst reasoning and justifying their responses in a safe environment. Viewing a student's grasp of the Mathematics Proficiencies (Understanding, Reasoning, Fluency, Problem-solving) through Maths Talks is a powerful tool for teachers to observe, assess and plan for at Rangeview.
Some variations of Maths Talks that Rangeview students engage in are listed below with links that provide examples and further information:
- Number Talks - https://www.youcubed.org/resources/number-talks-all-ages-video/
- Which One Doesn’t Belong - https://wodb.ca/
- Fraction Talks - http://fractiontalks.com/
- Dots Talks (expanded on below with examples)
- Images/ Pictures - http://ntimages.weebly.com/photos.html
- Shape Talks and Pattern Talks.
Dot Talks are a powerful Maths Talk used in Rangeview classrooms from Foundation to Level 6. We aim to spark curiosity and critical thinking in our students, and Dot Talks are an effective tool to support this. Our students love them! Some examples are below along with prompts that can be used with students to extend their Mathematical thinking.
To view a Dot Talk in action run by Jo Boaler (Professor of Mathematics Education at the Stanford Graduate School of Education) please watch Dot Talk in Action which also demonstrates prompts that are applied to support students’ reasoning skills. When engaging in Maths Talks with students at Rangeview, our teachers:
- Use the responses from students to label and record the strategy they have used.
- Vary the Maths Talk to suit the needs of students.
- Vary the sharing strategies and level of difficulty used.
- Ensure that the Maths Talk is accessible by ALL students, regardless of where they are in their Mathematics learning. This is often referred to a ‘low floor-high ceiling’ task.
This provides opportunities for all students to engage with the Mathematical concept at a level that is right for them, whilst ensuring their learning is extended with the support of their teacher and peers.
NAPLAN 2023
On Wednesday 23rd August, the State and National data for the 2023 National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assessments became available.
Of the 20 tests across grades 3 and 5 and years 7 and 9, Victoria ranked first or second in 16, more than any other state or territory, and an improvement on the 2022 results when the equivalent figure was 12.
As you will see below, we are incredibly proud of our student NAPLAN results at Rangeview Primary School.
