Some Ex-MECS students doing great things.

Congratulations to Lauren Caldwell (Class of '13) on being presented with the National Emergency Medal following her work fighting the 2019-2020 ‘Black Summer’ bush fires. Due to its unusual intensity, size, duration, and uncontrollable dimension, this fire was considered a megafire. Lauren, who has been in the CFA since 2008, was initially deployed from Montrose CFA to Grafton in NSW in October 2019 and then followed this up with a deployment to Swan Reach, Victoria in January 2020. Lauren, as part of the Montrose CFA, has also been involved in the conservation burns of the Senior School bushland over the last few years.

Congratulations also to Timothy Fernando (Class of '06) for his pivotal work in research and conservation of Central Australian desert fish. Over the past decade, climate change has had a big impact on the ecology of Central Australia. In particular, the oldest river in the world, Larapinta (the Finke River) has been significantly impacted. For the last two years, Tim has led the team involved in carrying out the annual fish survey of the 9 species of fish that live in Larapinta and associated water holes. So great is the concern about Larapinta that SBS has produced a series, Larapinta, hosted by Talia Liddle, on the ecology of the river. Tim’s work is highlighted in Episode 3 (https://www.sbs.com.au/ondemand/watch/2252242499662). The episode contains this description “Talia sees the work being done to protect country and create a healthier environment so that species can flourish; ecologist Tim Fernando introduces Talia to the animals only found along the river.”

Tim is now working at the Arthur Rylah Institute in Victoria, as a research scientist aiming to understand and protect our threatened galaxiid fish.

It is most encouraging to see how these ex-students are involved in caring for God’s good earth.
