Middle School Mural - A Story from the Lockdown Year
Lisa Dumicich, our Director of Teaching and Learning happened to meet Helena Martin, artist, at church as she was staying with one of our church families while doing some art work for Fusion - a Youth and Community Services organisation. She discovered as they talked that Helena was then meant to be travelling on to Queensland to do some murals there. However, with the borders closed she was unable to travel and was stuck in Melbourne. Fortunately for us, she agreed to come and do a mural for MECS and was able to complete it just before her visa ran out and she flew back to the United States on a repatriation flight.
So, from a Monday to a Thursday in June 2020 we had an artist in residence! Helena along with a group of Year 8 and 9 students and Olivia Dyer our Junior Secondary Art Teacher, painted a mural on the wall facing the basketball court in Junior Secondary School. Students were able to interact with her and discuss the mural process when they returned to school on Thursday. As you can see it is a much more interesting view now! It is fantastic to have art brightening the Junior Secondary area. Helena’s other works can be seen here http://helenamartinart.com/.
