BOOK WEEK

PARADISE SANDS,  Written by Levi Pinfold

"A book is a garden, an orchard, a storehouse, a party, a company by the way, a counselor, a multitude of counselors." – Charles Baudelaire (Famous French poet)

The senior students were enthralled by this magnificent, thought provoking, award winning book that was shortlisted for Book of the Year. A story of enchantment.

Some student musings about 'Paradise Sands'......

I think the brothers turned into dolphins. I wonder why the little girl didn't have a name. ~ Connor

The lion probably symbolises the toughest and the bravest of them all. I'm pretty sure the mum has been there as well. ~ Harper

I wonder what happened to the three boys. I think because they only had the spring water, it's what the Teller is using to turn them into sharks. ~ Yianna

I think that the lion is unkillable because when he exploded into dust, he was still talking to the little girl. ~ Ishe

I was quite intrigued when I read this book because it was mysterious in many ways. A question I have is 'How did the mother know about the haunted palace? ~ Amelia

During the whole story I was super confused and was thinking what I would do if I was there ~ Rahim

In my view, it's a lesson on stealing and to not steal from people. ~ Sheen

WELLBEING

The students in 5 / 6 chose 'Managing Stress' as their next unit of work in our Respectful Relationships Wellbeing curriculum. They identified a number of places where stress can be experienced; at home, at school, in the playground, at a sports ground, etc. Here are some of their responses.....

When I was Stressed, by Yash Dev

Two of my friends were arguing about who was better in a game, and in the park they were thinking about starting a physical fight at the park.

Me and Aryan were getting stressed out. Aryan was worried and felt a bit of discomfort. While I was feeling stressed and anxious.

I and Aryan went up to our two friends and tried to solve the problem but we couldn’t until one of my friend’s mum came up to him and my other friend and tried talking it out.

It kinda worked but they were still angry at each other.

 'Playground' by Yianna

When i was playing with some of my friends Onella and Harper, Onella said she will be right back to go somewhere and when she came back i asked her where did she go and she started to yell at me and say WHY DO YOU NEED TO KNOW and on  and on an I did not know why she was yelling at me and I felt sad, annoyed, stressed, and I had questions. I was stressed that she would not be my friend anymore. After that made me sad ~  she told me she did not want to be friends anymore and I did not know what to feel or think anymore but 5 weeks later she said sorry and i forgave her and I asked her all the questions I had to ask her.

One time I was Stressed,  by Izaac Patricio Rocha

One time I was stressed was at home when I had things to finish and places to go so I had to finish them. When I was about to finish my mom was calling me down and while i was answering my last question I told her ‘one more minute please’ I was writing so quickly my hand started to hurt but after I finally finished my last question I was very relieved and very very hungry.  I immediately sat on the couch and let the relief relish my very tired body and let the food satisfy my hunger and as I felt my strength come back I could finally play with my brother.

RRRR

A Time when you feel Stress,  by Harper Tran

I felt stress on the sports ground because there was a netball game going on and I was in it, my friends were in the two teams as well, we were competing against other schools.

I was so nervous that I actually thought someone would get hurt during the game. I was stressed for the whole game because lots of people were watching me and I get really nervous when people watch me. I don’t like it when lots of people watch me.

 Especially my parents.

It was very stressful, cause I normally don't go against other schools and I felt lots of emotions here like stress for the main one, nervous, anxiety, overwhelmed and I felt like I couldn’t do it for once.

I don’t like going against other schools but it was time that I got out of my comfort zone sometimes.

I was a bit skeptical about getting out of my comfort zone but I did it!

The Grand Final, by Jemimah Bakani

It was my 2023 tennis Grand final  and all my teammates and my family were counting on me to win the last set of my match. The  score was 40- 15 and I was serving a match point to win 6-4.

I could feel the pressure and the adrenaline in my body like someone was squeezing my hand so  hard I couldn’t move it. So I told myself that I could do it. I could also see my parents telling me to calm down and not to rush. Then I took a deep breath, got my ball out and  bounced the ball three times on the court, threw it up and threw my racquet up and BANG! The ball was gliding like a kite in the sky and landed right in the middle of the court.  I quickly moved into the court ready to return the ball, but my opponent missed it and that was it. Me and my teammates WON the Grand Final of 2023! I felt like all my stress and worry just drained out of my body and I was so happy that I made my team and my family proud. We won trophies and a flag that we get to put in our club which stays there in the club forever,  where we can see the achievement that we accomplished.

One day I had to take a test online.

I was very nervous and super anxious.

I was in the classroom sitting on my chair. The teacher was telling us the instructions on how to do it. I couldn’t fully listen because I was shaking in my hands and my legs, my heart was beating as fast as a car going at full speed.

Then, it was finally time to take the test. I put on my headphones and I was about to start. But suddenly, all these thoughts rushed through my head.

What if I don't do good? What if I do something wrong? What if I mess up?

I took a deep breath, pushed aside all my feelings and worries and started the test.

And just like that it was over. The test was finished. Finally! I was so relieved that I had completed it. I knew I did my best and gave it my all, but I still had a lingering feeling inside that made me feel nervous.

At least I was done.. For today.
