Lily McCowan-Triple Australian Champion
Year 12 and Sports Prefect created history at the School Sport Australia Swimming Championships to be the first Kambala student to win three Gold medals. Following in the footsteps of Olympian Judy Playfair who was also a Breaststroker, Lily achieved a rare feat winning the 50m, 100m and 200m Breastroke events.
Congratulations Lily!
IGSA Athletics Carnival
Our Athletics team performed well at the IGSA Athletics Carnival in Division 1 against the best schools in IGSA. Eight girls have been selected in the IGSA Athletics team, one of the highest across the 27 IGSA schools. The team was led by Athletics Captains Ava Kuehn and Allegra McGivern both of whom gained selection in the IGSA team. One of the highlights of the carnival was the number of personal bests achieved by the girls on the day. Ms Sambell had said to the girls prior to the event that if they achieved their personal best that is all we could ask as a school. There were so many PB’s we will need to get more PB prizes! A number of students also competed up divisions to ensure Kambala had the strongest possible team and it was great to see the girls rise to the challenge and finish in the top 9 in finals earning valuable points for the school.
It was gratifying to see the response to Year 12 Allegra McGivern after she ran the Senior 1500m. The cheers from the Year 7 supporters and the team when they were told Allegra ran for the school despite being in the middle of her International Baccalaureate exams was recognition of her leadership and commitment to representing the school. Allegra embodies what you can achieve in both academics and sport in Year 12.
The Junior Relay team of Margot Hindmarsh, Frankie Quick, Talia Gamerov and Elizabeth Somerville performed exceptionally well, improving half a second between the heat and final. The girls had started the Twilight Carnivals running 56 seconds and ran 53.01 to place 5th at IGSA, a 30m improvement! Great baton changes girls!
On the same day as IGSA Piper Sweeny travelled to Canberra for the School Sport Australia Cross Country Championships winning Gold in the 1500m time trial!

IPSHA Carnival
On a beautiful sunny winter’s day our Junior School Athletics team ventured out to Sydney Olympic Park to compete at the IPSHA carnival. With plenty of nerves and excitement in anticipation of the day ahead the Kambala team were ready to give it their all.
What a day it was as the girls produced outstanding results. With plenty of PB’s, ribbons and sore throats from cheering on their teammates the girls certainly made the most of the day.
Well done to all competitors on a thoroughly enjoyable day. You are a credit to our school with how you conducted yourselves and should be very proud of all you have achieved.
Special congratulations to the following girls who have progressed to the NSWCIS carnival to be held on Tuesday 19th September at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Track:
Alexia Coburn (8-10 yrs 800m and 1500m)

NSW State Snowsports Championships
Year 12 Mila Folsom had hoped to finish competing for Kambala at the National Snowsports Championships at Mt Buller. Unfortunately it was not to be with the warm conditions resulting in cancellation of the event. Mila has been a stalwart of the team and deserved to have one Nationals competition for her to finish her Snowboard career.
The students who had qualified for Nationals from the State Championships were Arabella Bugden, Ally Folsom, Mila Folsom, Sienna Howell, Frankie Johnston and Claudia McKee.
Isabella Hupfau and Frankie Quick gave up a day of competition at State to return to Sydney to compete for Kambala with distinction at the IGSA Athletics carnival. Eliza Watson had also qualified and chose to run at IGSA. Darcey Bell and Sybella Bowman competed at State with their respective teams and have gained confidence in their events.
Although our Junior School students just missed progressing through to Nationals their energy and enthusiasm on the mountain was infectious. I’m sure there is more to come from the girls. The State team consisted of Francesca Cochineas, Lexi Ogane, Emma Kennedy, Isadora Neale, Billie Quick and Olivia Rodriguez.

Netball Grand Final Results
Last Saturday was our netball grand final day and what an epic day it was. A huge thank you to all of our coaches, parents and supporters who came out to watch. Kambala definitely had a great cheer squad!
The first team to play was our Year 7A team and what a game this was. After being beaten in the first semi quite convincingly by KRB, our Kambala 14 team had a point to prove in this game. The girls started off strong and rattled KRB early as it went goal for goal. Our Kambala girls were tired and hot but did not give up until the final whistle. The score at fulltime was 27 all which meant joint premiers! An outstanding achievement for all of the girls.
Next team to play was our undefeated year 8B team. The game started off with Randwick coming out strong and taking an early lead. At half time the girls were still down but knew they could win as long as they kept going. The team had an outstanding second half and were able to win the match 16-10! Well done to all of the girls on an outstanding undefeated season. A special mention to Alana, the team’s shooter who injured herself before the final round game but still came and supported the team each week.
At 1.15pm we had our two senior teams playing; Kambala 1 Senior A and Kambala 6 our Year 11 team. Kambala 6 have had an outstanding season, coming up a few divisions from last year and making the Grand Final is an amazing achievement in itself. Unfortunately Randwick started the game too strong and the girls were unable to come back, going down 33-24. Well done girls on an amazing season!
Our Senior A game was an epic grand final. The support from the sidelines was so wonderful to be a part of. The girls started the game so well and were in the lead for most of the game. Unfortunately Saturday was not their day and they went down to Double Bay by 1 goal, a heartbreaking way to finish. I do want to say that no matter the result, what this team has achieved this year has never been done by a Kambala senior A team before and you should all be very proud of that! A big thank you to our Year 12 girls who played their final match for Kambala, you have made us all very proud.
Thank you to everyone who was a part of our netball program this year. I am already counting down the days till next season!

Hockey
The Kambala 3 (KAM 3) Junior hockey team travelled out to the Olympic Hockey Centre at Homebush to play PLC Armidale on Friday afternoon. Under the setting sun and in cool conditions KAM 3 had a challenging encounter against a much-fancied opposition. KAM 3 spent a major part of the defending against well drilled opposition they were held out by some great goal keeping from Charlotte Carroll.
The second half opened more opportunities for KAM3 with Elizabeth Somerville making some nice runs through the middle. The team’s persistence and perseverance are to be commended. A shout out also to the team’s two coaches Camilla and Ondine for all the work they have put in during Term 2 and 3.
