Wellbeing in Action

Year One Colour Monsters

This week, we're excited to share the fantastic wellbeing learning happening in our Year One classrooms! Our students have been exploring the Zones of Regulation, building on their Foundation experiences. Here’s what they’ve been up to:

Connecting with Emotions through The Colour Monster

To begin, the Year Ones read The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas. As they listened, students reflected on what connections they could make with the Colour Monster and what the different colours might represent. They also thought about their own emotions, considering what they know about the Zones of Regulation and imagining how the Colour Monster might feel.

Getting Creative with Colour Monster Puppets

Next, the fun began! Students made their own Colour Monster puppets using materials like paper bags, cardboard, and paper plates. They could choose any colour for their puppet - except for green! This was saved for a special activity where they created their Green Zone Monster, representing being calm and ready to learn.

Exploring Emotions and the Zones of Regulation

As they created their puppets, students thought about how they know they’re feeling a certain emotion, including what happens in their body when they experience different feelings. They learned that emotions can change throughout the day, depending on what’s happening around them.

The Green Zone: Ready for Learning!

Students then reflected on the Green Zone, where they feel calm, happy, and ready to learn. Using collage materials, they created their Green Zone Monster - a character that represents feeling calm and focused.

Exploring the Zones Through Puppet Shows

To wrap up, students worked in pairs or small groups to perform puppet shows. They used their puppets to act out emotions from the Red, Yellow, or Blue Zones, explaining what was happening and discussing strategies that could help them feel regulated and ready for learning.

Through creativity and exploration, our Year Ones are not only learning about the Zones of Regulation but also developing essential emotional regulation skills. We loved seeing their puppet shows and hearing all the creative solutions they came up with to feel calm, happy, and ready to learn! Well done, Year Ones!
