From the Year Prep Classroom

Halfway Mark!
We can hardly believe it, we’ve hit the halfway mark of the term! The countdown to the end of the year is on, and there’s still so much happening in Prep. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be consolidating all of our learning as we begin writing reports, preparing our current Preps for their transition into Year 1, and getting ready for some exciting events, including Swimming lessons, our excursion to Albury, the Christmas Concert, and plenty more!
What We’ve Been Up To
The past two weeks have been full of learning and special experiences. We had a very special visit from Ditto, who taught us about staying safe and knowing who to talk to if we ever feel unsafe. We also finished the week by wearing a touch of red to recognise the ‘Day for Daniel’ Australia’s largest child safety education and awareness event. This important day honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe and reminds us that keeping kids safe is a responsibility shared by everyone, parents, carers, educators, and the whole community.
Literacy – Exploring Nick Bland
In Writing, we have continued exploring the wonderful world of Nick Bland’s books. We’ve looked closely at the words and punctuation he uses to engage readers. We’ve discovered that Nick loves to use:
- BIG words and small words- we call them ‘SHOUTY WORDS’
- Onomatopoeia (sound words like WOW! STOP! SCREECH!)
- Exclamation marks, question marks, and speech bubbles
Our budding authors are now trying out these techniques in their own writing!
Home Reading Reminder: Please keep aiming for 10 minutes of reading at least 4 nights a week. This helps build fluency and confidence. Keep practising those tricky words, and if your child is ready for a challenge, try testing them on the ones they’ve been working on, they might even like to try spelling them too!
Maths – Numbers, Counting, and Money
In Maths, we’ve been having fun learning about ordinal numbers (first, second, third, etc.) with lots of friendly races and challenges in the classroom. Next, we’ll be exploring money, learning about coins, notes, and their values. This is a great opportunity to talk about money at home and discuss what things cost, compare coins, or even play “shop”! We’ve also been practising counting by 5s, 10s, and even 2s. If your child is up for a challenge to stretch their thinking, try starting from a different number for example, count by 10s starting at 7. These little challenges help strengthen number patterns and confidence.
Inquiry – Incubating Eggs!
Yes, it’s true, we’re incubating eggs in Prep! Our students are absolutely fascinated as they watch and learn about how a chick grows inside the egg before it hatches. This hands-on experience helps them understand the life cycle in a real and meaningful way. Families are welcome to pop in and check out our little science experiment as excitement levels are high!
Welcome Baby Kenzie!
One more baby in Prep G! We’re thrilled to share some wonderful news from MacSporran family, over the weekend, they welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Kenzie into the world! Here’s to a lifetime of giggles, cuddles, and unforgettable memories as they begin this exciting new adventure with baby Kenzie!
