We have hit the halfway mark of the term and the calendar of events for our Year 6 students is incredibly busy, and so is the energy and anticipation as we look forward to our camp in Melbourne next Wednesday. Most importantly, all the students are embracing their learning with a positive mindset both in and out of the learning space.

In Literacy, we are nearly halfway through our final novel study, Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow by Jessica Townsend, which follows the story of Morrigan Crow, a young, unloved daughter of state Chancellor, Corvus Crow, of Great Wolfacre, living in a place called Jackalfax in the Wintersea Republic. Morrigan was born on Eventide, considered a cursed day. Because of this, she’s blamed for every unfortunate event in her town and is destined to die, like all cursed children, on her twelfth birthday. When Eventide unexpectedly arrives a year early, Morrigan is dramatically rescued by a mysterious man named Jupiter North, who takes her to the magical city of Nevermoor.

The text has prompted some rich discussion and wonderings as what will happen next.

In Mathematics, we have completed our unit on, ‘Location and Transformation’, where the students learnt that shapes have a position in 2D space which can be changed and recorded, using Cartesian plane coordinates, including negative integers. We will now be starting our next unit on ‘Data Investigation’, where the students build their knowledge of graph interpretation, data validation and analysing data. They will learn how to recognise bias in data representations and select appropriate data collection methods to justify data display choices.

In Religion, we are focusing on ‘Sacred Stories’, where the students are learning the significance of sacred stories, particularly from the Bible, and how they influence beliefs, values, and cultures.

In Inquiry, the students are finding the Biological Science: Living Things and their Environment unit quite interesting. This unit focuses on how the physical conditions of the environment affect the survival of living things and the organisms that live in extreme environments.

It continues to be a busy and rewarding term, creating lifelong memories as they near towards the end of their primary school journey!
