Junior School Update

Junior Swim Program

Over the past fortnight, our Foundation to Year 6 students have been making waves at Barooga ARC, completing their intensive swim program. Some of the key skills the students developed included:

  • Water confidence and comfort – becoming relaxed in the water environment
  • Floating on front and back – the foundation of all swimming strokes and a crucial survival skill
  • Submersion and breath control – learning to hold breath and go underwater safely
  • Entry and exit skills – safely getting in and out of the pool
  • Basic stroke development – freestyle and backstroke fundamentals

The program was expertly administered by our Junior School teachers, education support staff, and Year 10 Project Ready students, who all did an amazing job instructing. Years 3-6 students spent last week in the pool, while our Foundation to Year 2 students took their turn this week.

Mr O'Dwyer and Mrs Clark were both amazed at the level of progression shown by the students, particularly our youngest cohort . Many F-2 students who started the program hesitant about the water finished the week by swimming independently and demonstrating proper breathing techniques.

While it is a big commitment to spend a large portion of the week out of the classroom and in the pool, we believe the benefits of this swim program are invaluable given how much Australian culture revolves around water activities. Equipping our students with strong swimming skills and water safety knowledge not only provides them with recreational opportunities but, more importantly, could save their lives.

We're incredibly proud of every student who participated and grateful to all the staff and Year 10 students who made this intensive learning experience such a success.

Year 2 Sleepover

Students from Year 1 and Year 2 enjoyed a fun-filled Games and Tea Night together, filled with laughter, Skillzone games, and plenty of excitement. The evening began with a range of outdoor games that encouraged teamwork and creativity, followed by a relaxed teatime eating pizza and chips where everyone had a chance to unwind and chat with friends.

After tea, the Year 1 students headed home, while the Year 2 students stayed on for an extra special treat—a school sleepover! They enjoyed a delicious pizza dinner together, followed by more games and bedtime activities.

The sleepover was a wonderful opportunity for the Year 2s to build independence and create lasting memories with their peers. It was a fantastic evening for all involved!
