Auslan News

Grade Preps have been learning new signs for feelings: happy, sad, excited, tired, bored, sick, safe, nervous, calm, love, shy, surprised, scared, angry, silly, proud, and brave! Students have been learning how important it is to use facial expressions when communicating in Auslan and expressing feelings. The Preps have been practising signing these different feelings through stories, songs, and playing a feelings memory card game. They have also been making mini Feelings Flip Books for their class library to sign during quiet reading time.

Grade 1-2s enjoyed using signs for describing and comparing animals to sign a description of their mythical creatures that they drew. They have also played an animal card game to practise describing and comparing 2 animals.

Grade 3-4s have also played some games in Auslan this week: ‘Rick Rolled’ to practise signing numbers to 30+ and ‘Roll a Robot’ to practise signing shapes. The Grade 3-4s also enjoyed creating their own Shape Robots on computer to sign in small groups to each other. The creative designs and array of different Shape Robots being signed was amazing!! There are a couple of photos below.

Grade 5-6s have been learning new signs in relation to School and Education:

school, principal, teacher, teach/educate, childcare (signed as CC), kinder (signed as school + K), primary school (P + school), Foundation/Prep – Grade 6, and high school, Year 7 – 12, curriculum, Term (fingerspelled), class, bell, recess, lunch, wash hands, learn, student, study, and subject.

We have pushed a bit harder in this topic by trying to learn specific school subjects also:

Art, Dance, Drama, English, Health, History, Language, Maths, Number, Music, Reading, Science, Spelling, Sport, Technology, and Writing!!

Lots of new signs to be practising at home. 😊

The Grade 5-6’s have been writing and practising the Auslan signs for their own paragraphs about a typical/chosen school day. The students will practise again this week and then video themselves signing their paragraph.

Carlton AFLW Footballers Visit

Yesterday we were lucky enough to have some Carlton AFLW footballers visit our school as part of the AFL Community Camps. The students were very excited to see some of their heroes. Darcy Vescio, Abbie McKay and Amelia Velardo joined in with ‘Kick 2 Kick’ at lunchtime, answered a number of questions from the students and signed autographs. We are very grateful for the time Darcy, Abbie and Amelia spent with our students and will certainly follow their careers with great interest.
