Term 2, Week 10
Welcome to the Grade 5/6 News Page
In Reading, we will spend our term focusing on 'responding to text'. We will develop our ability to evaluate and analyse author language choices, themes, symbolism and author's purpose.
In Writing we will continue to develop our skills and knowledge in creating imaginative and thoughtful narratives; we will look at poetry (in depth) for the first time this year, and create detailed and precise procedural texts.
In Mathematics, our weeks are broken into 2 sections. On Mondays and Fridays we focus on an Applied area of Mathematics and on Wednesdays and Thursdays, our students move into 'fluid groups' to develop their Mathematical understanding, at their individual point of need in the curriculum. In Term 3, we see our Fluid Groups expanding in to the area of Measurement and Geometry.
Our Applied Mathematics topics for Term 3 include Time and Mass and Capacity. In the first half of the term, our Fluid Groupswill focus on developing student's knowledge on Money and Financial Mathematics and Using Units of Measurement.
In Topic, students will examine Civics and Citizenship. We will explore the 3 levels of Government, Australian citizenship, how laws are made and enforced, identify different points of view on a contemporary issue relating to democracy and citizenship, and examine the concept of global citizenship. This unit will culminate in a trip to the Parliament of Victoria, whilst on the Grade 5/6 camp to Melbourne.
In STEAM, our Grade 5s will take on the Electricity unit, where they will consider renewable and non-renewable energy sources, how electricity is made, using simple circuitry and designing their own electrical project. Our Grade 6 students will move into deepending their understanding of Robotics. In this unit students will use the Lego Education Mindstorms EV3 program to build and code their robots.
Grade 5/6 Melbourne Camp
Planning is almost complete for the Grade 5/6 camp to Melbourne. The camp will take place from Wednesday, 11th September, until Friday, 13th September. At this stage, the cost of the camp is looking to be around $280 per student.
We will be staying at City CYC Camp which is located at 538 Collins St, a short stroll from Southern Cross Station. At this stage, we will be catching a train on both our to and from transport to Melbourne, as part of the V/Line Free Group Travel Program – we will receive confirmation of this in the middle of July.
Our program will consist of visiting: ACMI, Shrine of Remembrance, MSAC, Parliament House, Melbourne Museum, IMAX and The Queen Victoria Market.
To assist with planning, it would be great if you could let your child’s teacher know if your child will not be attending this camp. We will also be seeking a number of parent helpers to attend as well.
Further information regarding this camp will be sent home early in Term 3.
