Celebrating Harmony Week at LESC

Lakes Entrance Secondary College celebrated Harmony Week (16–22 March) with a range of lunchtime activities, with students and staff adding a splash of orange on Tuesday 17 March.
Harmony Week is a time to celebrate multiculturalism, inclusiveness and respect, recognising the diverse backgrounds that make up our community.
This year’s theme, “Everyone Belongs,” highlights the importance of creating a welcoming and respectful environment for all.
Traditionally, orange represents social communication and meaningful conversations, as well as the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect.
Australia is one of the most multicultural countries in the world. Our nation is home to the oldest continuous culture of First Nations peoples, and almost half of all Australians were either born overseas or have at least one parent who was. This rich cultural diversity brings with it a wonderful mix of traditions, languages, beliefs and, of course, food.
Harmony Week is a great opportunity to reflect on how we can build stronger connections within our community. Some simple ways to celebrate include:
- Being kind and inclusive
- Respecting each other’s similarities and differences
- Sharing a meal or creating a multicultural lunchbox
- Trying a meal from a family recipe
- Asking others about their culture
- Reconnecting with people or places that are meaningful to you
Wearing orange
Everyone has a role to play in creating a sense of belonging within our community. By showing respect, being inclusive and valuing each other’s stories and experiences, we continue to build a culture where everyone truly belongs.
