Truganina Community Library

The Truganina Community College Vision

As the new Teacher Librarian, it has been a privilege to involve our wonderful students in exploring a variety of different books whilst navigating the library. Students have enjoyed reading together and sharing their thoughts through active participation on new books and some hidden gems!

We have a diverse range of books within the library which is an important component to ensuring students have books that mirror their own life experiences or act as a window to others. I am passionate about celebrating important cultural days, such as Chinese New Year, Ramadan and St Patrick’s Day.

I also wanted to bring to the forefront our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors, whose stories share significant importance to our school community. These books are encouraged to be borrowed, as they are stories to be heard and shared with families. If these are books are of interest to you, I would welcome you to join your child to explore the selection after school on a Thursday.

The Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge has begun and will run through to September 4th. All students within the college have been registered. The Challenge began in 2005, with more than 4.7 million students have read over 66 million books across Victoria (VPRC, 2026). Truganina College encourages students to read for pleasure through recording their 300 nights of reading. The challenge will allow them to explore a variety of books that will inspire, fuel their knowledge of the world and dream, which support this year’s theme, ‘Stories to discover. Stories to tell.’ In a recent report from the National Literacy Trust (2026), reading enjoyment and daily reading both decline sharply as children move into adolescence, with the steepest drops occurring in the early teenage years. Through active participation in library sessions, students are learning to explore different genres in the library and read books they would otherwise not pick up.

The Challenge supports all year levels from Foundation to Year 9 with rules based around the year levels.

  • Foundation students to Year 2 are encouraged to read a total of 30 books, with 20 or more of those books from the Challenge book list.
  • Year 3 to Year 9 are encouraged to read a total of 15 books, with 10 or more of those from the Challenge book list.

Students are required to login and track books read: Each student has a dashboard to track the books they read for the Challenge. Once a student has read a book, they should mark it as finished on their reading list.

Lastly, students need to have books verified: Once a student has completed the Challenge, books need to be verified by a teacher or parent/carer. Following the verification, students that have completed the Challenge will receive a Certificate of Completion in Term 4.
