SUSTAINABILITY NEWS

Gardening Club

Today we looked after the worms in our worm bins and talked about why they are so important. They like having a nice cover over them, to help them feel safe and will come up to the top and eat all our food scraps. We collected shredded paper from the school office and the students soaked it in water, before making a thick layer on top of the worms. We were worried that maybe the worms had died as we couldn’t see any. Students suggested we dig down to see if we could find some. We did and … we  found hundreds of happy, healthy worms!

Hooray!

As worms eat our food scraps, the food passes through their digestive tracts where the waste is inoculated with microorganisms present in the worm's digestive tract. When the worm excretes the waste (worm poop, also called castings), the microbes are also released, enlivening the soil ecosystem. Worm castings are a highly valued garden fertilizer. The liquid created drips into a tray, which we collect in big buckets. We can mix two spoons of this “worm wee” into a big watering can, to give our plants a treat that will help them to grow.

Well done to our Compost Ninja team who collect our food scraps every day and feed them to the worms. By doing this, we save so much waste from going to landfill, helping to reduce methane gas, and therefore global warming. It is so good to know we are doing such a good job of saving our food scraps and turning them into great compost for our gardens!

Trinity Trash Transformers

The Year 5/6 TTT team have been busy collecting cans and bottles with the 10 cent recycling symbol! Please save your drink containers for us to raise money for something really fun! Students give these to their classroom teacher and the TTT team collect and count them every Wednesday.

Free online Gardening Help this Tuesday evening

Next Tuesday evening I’ll be learning about designing my own dream garden, in a Yarra Council online session with garden guru Kat Lavers. Anyone is welcome to join this FREE event - you’ll learn how to develop a clear vision and set goals, analyze your site including sun and microclimates, and design from patterns to details using a logical, step-by-step process. Hosted by small space food production specialist, gardening educator and permaculture designer Kat Lavers who will share practical tips for incorporating common elements like veggie beds, fruit trees, chickens, water tanks, and pergolas so you can design a beautiful, productive, and sustainable space.
