Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) is an important initiative that is now being introduced at Trinity. The initiative in Victoria is funded by the Victorian Government, with the Department of Education working in partnership with the Murdoch Children's Research Institute and the University of Melbourne to support schools as they implement the program which has now been rolled out in 1000 schools. Schools are recognised as being an ideal platform for promoting children’s mental health, identifying early signs of mental health concerns, and supporting referrals to community-based mental health services when necessary.
Research shows that while teachers play a key role in supporting student wellbeing, many report feeling uncertain about identifying students who may be experiencing mental health challenges or about how to communicate effectively with children and families about these concerns. The Mental Health in Primary Schools initiative aims to build staff confidence and knowledge so that schools are better equipped to support the wellbeing of every student.
A key part of the initiative is the appointment of a Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader (MHWL) within the school. This staff member undertakes specialised training to help lead and strengthen mental health and wellbeing practices across the school. I am pleased to share that I will be undertaking this role at Trinity.
The professional learning program includes an induction session and three core modules: Mental Health Literacy, Building Capacity, and Supporting Need for the appointed Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader as well as for two other staff members to strengthen the program within our school. It also includes a Community of Practice for the Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, where leaders connect with colleagues from other schools.
We have only just begun this journey at Trinity, and we are excited about the opportunities it will bring to further strengthen the wellbeing support we provide for our students. As we continue to learn and grow through the program, we look forward to keeping the Trinity community updated along the way. If you would like more information, please refer to the link below.
