Specialist Science - Term 1 Update

What an exciting start to our very first term of Specialist Science at our school!

This term has been built around one core idea: science is not just something you learn about - it is something you do.

Weeks 1-3: Earth and Space Systems

We began our journey by exploring Earth and Space systems, encouraging students to think like scientists from day one. The emphasis was on asking strong questions and making thoughtful predictions. Students quickly discovered that science starts with curiosity - not answers.

One highlight was our “Space Walk” experiment, where students investigated the scaled size and distance of the planets in our solar system.

Weeks 4-5: Physics - Forces and Energy

Our focus then shifted to forces and energy. Students explored how pushes and pulls affect movement and how energy can travel in different ways.

A class favourite was constructing and testing cup-and-string telephones. Students investigated how sound vibrations travel through solids and quickly learned that careful planning improves results. It was wonderful to see students problem-solve, refine their designs, and experience that moment when their communication device actually worked.

Weeks 6-7: Chemistry - Matter and Materials

We are currently exploring chemical reactions through our upcoming “Fizzy Balloon Bomb” experiment. Students are developing hypotheses about what will happen when vinegar and baking soda combine. Rather than simply observing a reaction, students are learning to process information, model their thinking, and analyse outcomes. The excitement is building as they predict whether mixing two common substances can create something entirely new.

Looking Ahead - Weeks 8-11: Biology and Health Science

Later this term, we will investigate living systems and how different parts of organisms work together. Students will learn how to evaluate evidence and communicate their scientific understanding clearly - essential skills for both science and life.
