Year 4 and 5&6 Gala Day
You will have received an operoo form in regards to our Interschool Sport Gala Days for Year 4 on Tuesday 25th March and Year 5&6 on Thursday 3rd April. The sports we are running are Ultimate Frisbee, Cricket Blast, Newcombe Ball (Yr 4)/ Volleyball (for 5&6) and Hot Shots Tennis. These will be run at Donvale Reserve and Doncaster Tennis Club. These days can’t be run as smoothly without some assistance from parents with coaching/scoring teams as we have many teams to run and a couple of venues to run these sports at. These days replace the weekly inter-school sport so you can imagine there are lots of students participating in sport all at once over many fields and venues. So if you can assist a team in any way, we would really appreciate it. If you are able to assist in any way, if you could email me directly at catherine.wall@sjvermont.catholic.edu.au that would be really appreciated. We definitely need a few more volunteers for our 5&6 day particularly.
Spotlight on Learning
In PE with our 1s and 2s we are reviewing our skills of underarm and overarm throwing and catching. In year 1 we do this in different rotations, participating in different activities that help us refine these skills and in year 2 we do a mix of rotations and games.
We continue to revise throwing and catching throughout the curriculum as these skills form the foundation of many sports and physical activities, allowing children to engage in movement throughout their education and beyond, and reap the physical, social, emotional and mental benefits of doing so.
Throwing and catching also helps develop crucial skills that play an important part in everyday function, including:
- Integrated movement
- Visual perception and control
- The ability to react and concentrate
- hand-eye coordination
- Fine motor skills
- Gross motor skills
- Sensory skills
I find many students still need a lot of assistance with these skills at this age and if you are able to head out with them at times with them and practice these skills, it would be extremely beneficial to them. If you need more information on how I teach these skills in PE, here is a great resource for underarm throwing, overarm throwing and catching. It also gives you some great ideas on what you can do to develop these skills through play.
Team Vic Key Dates
At this time of year some parents will ask me about how their child can apply for a spot in the SSV Team. Here you will find the key dates for when registrations will open for each of the sports. Please ensure you have a read of the information sheet that should answer all of your questions. Parents are able to register your child in a sport that they feel their child excels in. Please be advised it is a highly competitive process.
If there are more than 3 students that apply for a sport, SSV will advise SJV as we are only able to endorse 3 students for one sport. The only other time SJV needed to be involved is if your child makes the Vic Team, the principal will be asked to endorse the student before they can register for the team. I hope this answers some of the questions you may have.
Some of the sports still open are 12 years and under girls Australian Football, Girls Cricket, Girls soccer, 10-12 years cross country, 12 years and under Boys/Girls Golf and 10-19 years for swimming.
Stay safe, keep active
