AIMING FOR EXCELLENCE: HOMEWORK CLUB

Hazel Glen College has recently reviewed and relaunched our Secondary Years Homework Guidelines. Please refer to Compass for the 'Information for Families Documents' that outline expectations for students at each stage of their secondary education. We are excited to announce that beginning from Term 2, we will launch our inaugural Homework Club for Secondary Years students on Thursday afternoons. This will be a comfortable and inviting space for all students in Years 7-12 to develop positive study habits with the support of the teaching staff. Stay tuned for more information and details.

YEAR 7 LIVEABILITY EXCURSION

Year 7 students headed into Melbourne's CBD to research and take note of what the centre of a large city contains and how it might be different to living in the suburbs. Students started by travelling 88 stories high above the city, visiting the Eureka Skydeck, and spending time looking down on the many landmarks that highlight the beautiful city of Melbourne.

From there, students walked along the Yarra River and were able to stop and look up at the many buildings and features that have developed here in the last 100 years. They had some questions to answer about what they were seeing and hearing on the city streets.

Finally, students boarded a one-hour narrated river cruise, which gave some amazing insights into our bridges and waterways and showed us some really cool features of our city as seen from the water. It was a beautiful sunny day, and the conversations and smiles were fantastic to see. They will have lots to share on their upcoming Humanities KAT about what they observed and took notes about from this excursion.

HOUSE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

What an exciting and action-packed day it was yesterday at our annual Swimming Carnival. Students from Years 7 to 12 gathered for a fantastic day filled with both fun and competitive events.  Across the day we held events such as the dunk tank, dry games and face painting. We saw lots of encouragement and individuals trying new things and stepping out of their comfort zone.

There were numerous water events where students and teachers participated showcasing their talent and team spirit, including races, free swim and water slides. There was something for everyone, whether it was competitive or just for fun, it was awesome to see so many individuals participating and contributing towards points for their house.

A highlight of the day was the Year 12’s last swimming carnival ever, they had the chance to dress up and have some fun designing costumes with their friends. It was a chance for the Year 12s to have a break from their studies and compete in all sorts of games.

At the end of the day the school had a vote to pick the best dressed, from Grimaces to cheerleaders and the winner of the day being the Hawaiians.

We would like to thank the VET Sport and Rec students who were in charge of the BBQ, giving up some of their time throughout the day to help out, as well as all the teachers involved who were able to make the day happen.

We look forward to finding out the winning house in the coming weeks. Now, our eyes turn to the athletics carnival taking place on the 27th of March.

YEAR 9 RETREAT

Our Year 9 students recently embarked on an unforgettable Retreat Day at Clifford Park, designed to strengthen resilience, foster teamwork, and build deeper connections with their peers.

The day was packed with engaging team-building activities that challenged students to step out of their comfort zones, communicate effectively, and support one another. The highlight for many was Challenge Valley—an obstacle course that tested both physical and mental endurance, featuring a thrilling water slide and, of course, the infamous mud pits! Laughter and encouragement filled the air as students embraced the challenge, working together to navigate the course and emerge with a well-earned sense of accomplishment.

A huge thank you to all the staff who supported the event and helped make the day such a success.

A CHANCE FOR MELBOURNE STORM TICKETS

Mr Elvin Ho and Year 9 Students Oliver and Cade organised a lunchtime competition for students to try their luck and skill at throwing a rugby ball through a target.

Congratulations to Giovanni and Cooper (Year 8), Charles, Leon and Iziyah (Year 9) for winning the competition and tickets to Melbourne Storm's season opener against the Parramatta Eels this Sunday.

Thank you Mr Ho, Oliver and Cade for organising and running this activity.

2025 SEMESTER ONE CLUBS PROGRAM

Our Semester One Clubs Program began last week with students attending a variety of clubs each lunchtime. These clubs are great opportunities for students to connect with others and learn new skills. It has been fantastic to see so many students in attendance.

The college will also be running our Breakfast Club on Thursday mornings from 8:00 AM-8:40 AM. Students are encouraged to come and grab something to eat and drink before starting their school day.
