Heads of Secondary Years' Report

Dear Parents, Carers and Friends of Hazel Glen College,
This Saturday is International Women's Day. This special day is celebrated annually on March 8, to honor the achievements of women, while advocating for gender equality. International Women's Day, provides an important platform to engage with the community, reflect on progress and promote positive action. The theme for this year is 'Accelerate Action'. According to the World Economic Forum at the current rate of progress, it will take until 2158, to reach full gender parity! As individuals, we can all take steps to accelerate action. We can challenge stereotypes and discrimination, question bias and celebrate the success of women. Happy International Women's Day to all of the wonderful women in our community for tomorrow.
A reminder that parent-teacher interviews will take place on 28th March, and this is a student-free day. Interviews will occur over Webex during regular school hours. More information about these interviews will come soon through Compass.
It has been a busy 2 weeks since our last newsletter. The Year 9's had a wonderful time on retreat, and the Year 7's had fun exploring the city on their livability excursion. Also, our Year 7 and 8 ADA students visited the MCG and sports museum, and we have had many different year-level cohorts out on sports. Our Year 12 Physics class went to Luna Park, and some of our students participated in the Koorie Connections program.
Today we were excited to have Susan McLean attending our College to speak with our Year 7 cohort regarding CyberSafety and other concerns that they may have to navigate online. Susan is a former Victoria Police Officer, who was one of the first to investigate online crimes in the early 2000s. Susan has dedicated her life and career to working with young people, their families and school/community groups about online activity and how to protect yourself. We will also follow up with lessons in iThrive throughout the year that address how to be safe online. There are resources that will be shared with families, that you can use to follow up at home.
We had a wonderful end to our week with the Secondary Years Swimming Carnival. You can read all about it in the celebrations learning section of the newsletter. We are all now getting excited for the Secondary Years Athletics Carnival on the 27th of March, but please ensure that you consent to this event prior to the 20th of March and we don't want anyone to miss out.
We hope our Year 8s have a wonderful time on camp next week.
Enjoy the long weekend!
