Year 8 Girls Cricket Division Premiers 2025

Our Year 8s, who as Year 7s in 2024 had won the State Premiership by 31 runs against Thornbury, on Friday 14 March headed to Ringwood Secondary College with the aim of defending their Division Title against our traditionally keen rivals.

Winning the toss, we decided to put runs on the board. Jassie F and Lottie W provided a solid start with a partnership of 41 before Lottie was run out for 16 (two 4s) at the bowler’s end by a direct hit from mid-on. Dana S joined Jassie and her rapid 9 (one 4) saw our total reach the half century before she cracked one back to the bowler, who skilfully took an overhead catch. Jada B (two 4s in her total of 14) and Jassie (two 4s in her total of 27) had accumulated another 35 for their team when Jassie was judged LBW to a ball that kept low. Three quick wickets by three different bowlers saw the dismissal of Bonnie P, Jada and Emma L (all bowled). It was left to Chloe L and Jas A to see out the last over and they were Not Out at the conclusion of our 15 over innings.

Our 104 for the loss of 6 wickets (5 different Ringwood bowlers) indicated to us that not only was our opponent’s attack stronger this year, but we would need to bowl tightly and be vigilant in the field (fewer than 7 an over) to defend our total. Pleasingly, our focused repose saw us apply pressure on their batters right from the first over, with just two hits managing to reach the boundary throughout their innings. Although we only captured 2 wickets for the match, when Ringwood’s total was 17 after 8 overs, we knew we were in a strong position.

Jada (0/5), Jassie (0/12) and Bonnie (0/8) bowled their full complement of 3 overs each. Dana (0/2), Lottie (0/8) bowled 2 overs each. Jas (0/5) and Emma (0/5) rolled their arm over for one each. Our 2 wickets were both from Run Outs. The first was from first game player, Holly S, who quickly reacted at mid-off and threw truly to bowler Bonnie.  The second was from Bonnie at backward point to keeper Dana on a second attempted run.

Norwood 6/104 off 15 overs d Ringwood 2/51 off 15 overs.

The team spirit and camaraderie from both schools was evident to all observers and everyone agreed it was another enjoyable day of cricket. Perhaps the most memorable moments were the dismantling of the gazebo, as well as the fun photos taken by Chloe’s mum! We are looking forward to resuming the competition at Eastern Region in Term 4.

Year 7 Girls Cricket Division 2025

Congratulations to all this year’s squad on receiving the Premiership Pennant. (Some of the information below was provided in our Compass Newsletter last year and is included here especially for students and parents new to Norwood.)

From 1991 to 1994, our Year 7 girls combined with our Year 8s in what was then the Junior Girls Cricket Team. For those 4 years, our girls were undefeated and consequently claimed 4 premierships at Division level. Some of those teams during these years claimed State Premierships.

From 1995 to 2024, the Year 7 girls and the Year 8 girls had separate teams. From 1995 to 2024, the Year 7 girls won every game at Division level. Therefore, Norwood’s Year 7 girls were undefeated and Premiers at Division level for the 34 years from 1991 to 2024.

This year our enthusiastic girls, who had trained impressively during lunch times as well as after school, were very much looking forward to a good day of cricket, but with no opposing team for the first time ever, we can't wait until the Region competition in Term 4.
