Pasture Renovation
Annual pasture renovation has started on our dairy flats with staff and students speed-tilling, sowing and rolling seed in for new pasture. We'll look to do the same in the PWD irrigated country in coming weeks and plans are in place to spread fertiliser and lime across the paddocks.
Beef
Maiden heifers have started calving with a dozen calves on the ground and doing well. Feedlot trial cattle were drafted ready for induction and entry to the feedlot next week. The trials will be coordinated with Mrs Staker and the Year 12 students, which will give them the opportunity to look at the types and classes of cattle to feed, feed conversation and market options.
Better Beef Conference
Beef focused Year 12 students attended the Better Beef Conference in Bunbury yesterday. A huge thanks to WALFA and Mitchell's Transport for sponsoring our students to attend. This conference was a great opportunity for students to meet people in industry and learn about marketing, global beef production, supply chain challenges, scaling grain feeding in WA, innovation and sustainability in beef production.
WorkSafe Visit
Mr Craig Sullivan from WorkSafe visited the school this week and along with our Assistant Farm Manager and Beef TO they spoke to the students about farm safety. Craig is a former employee of the College. It was great to have someone who understand the College, farm and students to reinforce the messages about safety. Sometimes hearing it from someone else and with statistics to back up the messages, really helps.
