SOUTH GIPPSLAND SCHOOLS MUSIC PROGRAM
It has been another vibrant and rewarding musical year for the SGSMP. We began with our annual Try-Out Day, giving our new Year 7 students the opportunity to explore the SGSMP program and experience the range of instruments we teach.
In May, SGSMP students participated in a combined workshop day with peers from Leongatha and Mirboo North, strengthening our partnership with neighbouring schools and building new musical connections.
June saw the return of our Mid-Year Music Concert—a celebration of the hard work and achievements of our VCE Music students, SGSMP Ensembles, and Rock Band members.
By September, the school production was in full swing, with many SGSMP students lending their talents to the production band.
In October, our vocal students enjoyed a dynamic workshop with singer–songwriter Lisa Young from Coco’s Lunch, where they explored World Music concepts inspired by South Indian classical singing and Zulu-influenced rhythms and phrases.
In late November, our Concert Bands presented an intimate performance evening. Each piece highlighted a different musical style, giving students the chance to demonstrate their technical skill, musical maturity, and expressive range.
To conclude the year, the program hosted the SGSMP Summer Festival—a week filled with rehearsals, collaboration, and a final performance that encapsulated the dedication, growth, and joy experienced throughout the year. It was a wonderful celebration of our students’ talent and commitment.
We extend our sincere thanks to Ms Handley, Ms Reymers, Ms Kennedy, Mr Abicare, Mr Beale, Mr Brandsma, Mr John, Ms McMaster, Ms Franssen and Mr Foon for their outstanding work within the SGSMP. We also acknowledge the support of our partners—the Korumburra Lions Club, Martin Carlson, and Soundhouse—and the many parents and carers who assist with home practice and early-morning rehearsal drop-offs.
Thank you for helping make 2025 a memorable musical year.
