MATHS

In 2025, Maths classes have been a place for curiosity, inquiry and learning growth. Across the college, students have participated in a wide array of learning activities, that challenge their thinking and show them what success looks like as a Maths learner.

During the year we were able to monitor each student’s growth using ACER and Renaissance testing data, their achievement on Common Assessment Tasks (CATs), and their skills levels on Mathspace. This data allowed our maths teachers to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement so they could target each students’ individual needs.

Students and staff engaged with the new Victorian Curriculum 2.0, which saw some changes to each year level’s yearly programs. A highlight of these changes was seeing Year 8 students engaging with Pythagoras’ Theorem and applying skills to an unfamiliar content area. Despite this content area moving from Year 9 to Year 8, students engaged well with the new learning activities. Teachers used structured worked examples alongside scaffolded booklets support students’ developing understanding of the theory.

Maths teachers also participated in Professional Learning, focused on Mathematical Modelling. As part of this series, teachers improved their understanding of how Mathematical Modelling is incorporated into learning sequences and how to embed these types of tasks into Unit Design.

VCE and VCE-VM students saw success in Maths this year, completing the subject at the right level of challenge for them and engaging with the relevant Areas of Study. VCE teachers worked with individual students to provide support and used learning data from S/N Tasks, SACs and practice exams to provide feedback and ensure all students had the best learning experience.

I would like to take this time to thank all Maths teachers this year for their dedication to student learning growth and their focus on improvement. I look forward to seeing continued success in the Maths domain in 2026.
