HUMANITIES

It’s been a busy and rewarding year for our Humanities students, with plenty of opportunities to take their learning beyond the classroom and connect with real-world experiences.

On March 24th, our Year 8 and Year 10 Geography students put their fieldwork skills to the test during an excursion to Inverloch. It was the perfect day for exploring, walking, and learning together as they investigated coastal landforms, examined how coastlines change over time, and discovered how erosion is managed along our beautiful coastline. The trip offered a wonderful opportunity for students to see their classroom learning come to life — and to appreciate the natural beauty of our local area.

Back at school, 9A Humanities spent Term 2 developing their “on-task stamina” — learning how to stay focused and engaged during lessons. Students tracked their growth over time and experimented with different learning approaches, including mindfulness and stillness games like Sleeping Tigers (also known as Dead Fish). It was fantastic to see how much progress the class made, finding strategies that helped them concentrate, stay calm, and do their best work.

Our Year 10 History students have also had some memorable experiences this year. On April 28th, they visited the National Vietnam Veterans Museum in Newhaven to learn more about Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, particularly the Battle of Long Tan. Their guide, Peter, shared fascinating stories about conscription and its impact on young people at the time. Students were especially moved to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men who enlisted — often concealing their heritage so they could serve and fight for Country — a number far greater than the 500 officially recorded.

A special highlight came when several students shared the names of relatives who served in Vietnam and were presented with certificates recognising their grandparents’ or great-uncles’ service. Learning which units their family members had served with made the history feel even more personal and meaningful. Chad and Phoenix thanked Peter on behalf of the class and teachers, Mr Churchill and Ms Kennedy, for such an inspiring and informative day.

On October 20th, a second group of Year 10 History students also visited the museum. The excursion tied in perfectly with their studies on the Battle of Long Tan, conscription, and Australia’s role in conflicts across the Asia–Pacific region. Students gained valuable insights into the experiences of Australian soldiers and the lasting impact of the Vietnam War on both veterans and society. A big thank you to Mr Smith for joining the group and sharing his fascinating stories about training on different weapons — definitely a highlight for many students!

Finally, a huge congratulations goes to our Year 10 History students on their fantastic results in the Australian History Competition. Ms Kennedy’s class participated during Semester One, with results recently announced. We’re so proud of Xander and Stella, who earned Certificates of Distinction, Riley, who achieved a Certificate of Credit, and Zac, who received a Certificate of Merit. Well done to these students for representing Korumburra Secondary College with such pride and achievement!
