Our Learning & Celebrations
Maths
Prep A
As part of our Mathematics learning this term, the Prep students have been exploring 2D shapes and their properties. They have been learning to identify and describe familiar shapes such as circles, squares, rectangles and triangles, focusing on features including sides and corners. To apply their understanding, students designed and created their own robot pictures using a variety of 2D shapes.
Prep B
The activity encouraged creativity while reinforcing their shape knowledge, and the students proudly produced a wonderful range of imaginative robot designs.
Prep C
Unit of Inquiry
Transdisciplinary theme:
Where we are in place and time
Central idea:
Family histories provide insight into culture.
Prep A
This week, the Prep students began their new PYP Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme Where We Are in Place and Time. Our central idea is Family histories provide insight into culture.
Prep B
We started by unpacking the central idea and engaging in a discussion about what culture means. Students discovered that culture is made up of many things that make people and places unique, including the languages people speak, the clothing they wear, the food they eat, the music and art they create, important landmarks, sports, and the holidays and festivals they celebrate.
Prep C
As part of our learning, students explored Australian culture by sharing their ideas and experiences before creating a collaborative mind map. We are excited to continue our inquiry as we learn more about our own family histories and the diverse cultures within our community.
World Environment Day 🌏
World Environment Day is like a global ‘birthday’ celebration for nature! Held every year on 5 June, it encourages people around the world to learn how to protect and care for the places we love. Millions of people, from Australia to Africa, take part in activities that help keep our planet healthy and beautiful.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations in 1973 as a day to raise awareness about protecting our environment, wildlife, and natural resources.
Beating Plastic Pollution
One of the major themes of World Environment Day is reducing plastic pollution.
Plastic waste can harm animals, plants, and waterways, so it is important that we all do our part to reduce the amount of plastic we use.
How Can We Help?
We can all be environmental heroes by following the Three Rs:
Reduce – Use less and avoid waste. Bring a reusable water bottle and lunch containers.
Reuse – Give old items a new purpose. For example, use egg cartons for craft activities.
Recycle – Sort paper, glass, cans, and other recyclable materials correctly.
Small Changes, Big Impact!
Children can make a big difference. Every small action adds up!
Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.
Walk, ride your bike, or scooter to school when possible.
Use beeswax wraps instead of plastic wrap.
Our Planet, Our Future
This World Environment Day, we learned that Earth is a precious gift. By caring for our environment, we become guardians of our planet and help create a healthier future for everyone.
“The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.” — Robert Swan
Nude Food Day!
To celebrate World Environment Day, students participated in Nude Food Day by bringing lunches with little or no disposable packaging. This simple action helped reduce waste and showed how small choices can make a positive difference for our environment.

What We Are Learning Next
Literacy - Phonics Plus
• Recognise and use the graphemes x and qu and their corresponding sounds.
• Read and spell words containing x and qu (e.g. box, fox, quit, quiz).
• Continue to develop their blending skills to read words accurately.
• Practise segmenting words into individual sounds for spelling and writing.
• Build confidence reading decodable words and simple sentences using known letter-sound correspondences.
• Learn that the letter q is always followed by u when representing the /kw/ sound.
• Consolidate previously learned sounds and high-frequency words through daily reading and writing activities.
• Continue developing correct letter formation and handwriting skills.
Maths - EMP
For the remainder of Term 2, Prep students will continue developing their early maths skills. We will focus on addition strategies such as counting on and adding “plus 1,” while also strengthening number knowledge by counting in 10s using bundling sticks.
Students will explore measurement concepts including length and capacity and continue learning about 2D shapes and their features. We will also revisit and consolidate key concepts taught throughout the term.
