SMC Op Shop sparks sustainable style
The College’s pop-up op shop, held on Wednesday 17 June in the Senior School, was a resounding success, bringing sustainable fashion to life for students in Years 6 to 12.
With more than 60 bags of new and pre-loved clothing, shoes and accessories generously donated, the milangkani room transformed into a treasure trove of fashion finds for our style-savvy thrifters to explore.
Proving that environmental responsibility and personal expression can go hand in hand, students filled recyclable bags with their new pieces. Every item was free, which was a win for both the planet and the hip pocket.
Well done to the Footprint Team, who worked tirelessly to sort donations and set up the space for trading. Their efforts were underscored by a powerful message shared at the last school assembly: the fashion industry’s environmental impact is staggering.
In Australia, enough clothing already exists to dress the entire population without producing a single new garment! Even one T‑shirt can require up to 2,700 litres of water to make, and many modern fabrics contain plastics that shed microplastics and linger in landfill for decades.
Remember: small choices lead to big impact. By choosing pre‑loved clothing, whether from school events, local op shops, or online second‑hand platforms such as Depop or Facebook Marketplace, we can help support a more sustainable and mindful fashion culture.
A very big thank you to all students and staff who supported this fantastic initiative.
Bell Shakespeare visit
Last week, the College welcomed Bell Shakespeare, Australia's national Shakespeare company, for engaging performances of Romeo and Juliet and Macbeth.
Our Year 9 and 10 students were fully immersed as the actors brought Shakespeare's worlds to life with humour, intensity and an interactive style that made the language and themes feel fresh and accessible.
The session strengthened classroom learning and gave a memorable encounter with live theatre.
Warning: Hazard ahead
Dr Jeremy Just turned an ordinary day in the Science Lab into a full-scale biohazard operation, suiting up in full PPE to demonstrate the power and purpose of vaccinations.
The lesson became a hands-on model of how immunisation protects communities – perfect timing as we head into the cold and flu season!
