Senior Secondary

News from Years 10 - 12

The Senior Secondary Cafe is Open!

Our Year 12 VCE VM class have been busy behind the scenes getting the Senior Secondary Cafe ready to go. Over the last 3 weeks, they have been working on menus, allocating specific roles, considering profit margins and drumming up interest for the cafe. After a big effort to deep clean the cafe at the end of last year, we gained our registration and will continue to work with Yarra Ranges council to make sure our cafe is up to the health and safety standards to operate as a business. We even did our food and safety handlers training last year in order to be prepared for our work in the cafe.

The truth is, the cafe is not just about learning business strategies or supplying food and coffee to the students and staff. What we also learn through the cafe is how to work as a team. Unit 3 of Personal Development Skills is all about understanding ourselves, and our strengths and weaknesses in how we relate to others. Students need to assess their interpersonal skills and think about which of these need improvement. Is it how they communicate verbally or in their body language? Is it how they negotiate (my way or the highway?!). Part of my role is discussing areas that I struggle with, and showing that it is not a weakness to see opportunities for growth in yourself. God does not require perfection, but a heart that is turned towards him and seeks to continually reflect on how we can be more like Christ.

Our cafe will have highs and lows, and through every challenge or mistake we will learn about grace and humility. Well done Year 12s on a great start, and we can't wait to see where the year takes us!
