2024 School Council Elections
Dear Parents,
School council elections are upon us, and I would like to take this opportunity to ask parents to consider joining school council. Recently there have been some familiar faces depart council, and we would really like to see some new faces from our parent group join. You do not need any qualifications, just a desire to work together to make our school as good as it can be. We are currently seeking three parents to join school council for what is a two year term. Nomination forms can be collected from the main office. For those considering school council, below is some information which may be useful.
- School council meets eight times per year (one has already been held) at 5:30pm on mostly Thursday nights for what is usually an hour long meeting, but never longer than 90 minutes. A light supper is provided for all.
- Each school councillor joins a sub-committee of either Finance and Governance, Education and Community, or Buildings and Grounds. These sub-committees meet at a time that suits members, approximately two weeks before a council meeting to work on their portfolio, and write a short report for council.
- Finance and Governance looks over school spending and budgets, governance policy formation and the progress of the Annual Implementation Plan.
- Education and Community focuses on parent voice in certain areas of educational policy formation, as well as increasing community participation with the school.
- Buildings and Grounds plans appropriate works, enters into contracts and maintains or improves the school's environment.
- In addition to council meetings, councillors are invited to take part in school events as hosts or special guests. These include our production, art-show, information nights and graduation to name a few.
It is important to note what school council does not do. School council does not deal with the day to day operations of the school. This includes events, staffing, curriculum programs, or complaints. School councillors are there to represent all in our community rather than certain interest groups.
For a school of over 300 students, we certainly do hope there are at least a handful of parents willing to give some time towards making the school, and school community we all benefit from, as good as it can possibly be.
I look forward to seeing your name on a nomination form which are available from the office, and which were sent to you via XUNO last Wednesday.
Regards,
Vince Scarfo
School Council President
