Learning in Action

Literacy:

The Grade 3s have continued to avidly read and delve into Matilda and use the Narrative Hill structure to plot what unfolds in the chapters. This assists them in making connections between reading and writing and understanding how the main character drives the plot in a story. In our recent library sessions, students were treated to a book ‘cafe’ wherein they sampled a variety of fiction books. They were encouraged to explore a different genre in 4 min bites. We were thrilled to note that nearly everyone had found a new, good fit book that they were willing to try! In the grammar sessions, students have continued to  learn about the different types of verbs, such as ‘state of being ‘verbs and how to create grammatically correct sentences.

Continuing with the narrative structure, students will notice and discuss the role of the setting, focussing on strong verbs and precise adjectives and their role in helping the reader visualise the scene. Our grammar lessons will be on pronouns and their purpose. In preparation for NAPLAN, we will also be revising the persuasive writing style and writing a few pieces to a time limit.

Maths:

In the past fortnight the Grade 3’s have continued working on place value and have focused on the importance of the 0 digit as a placeholder. Students have worked further on representing numbers in expanded form.

In our applied sessions students have enjoyed working as palaeontologists to measure dinosaur footprints. Students have worked to compare and order the different lengths of dinosaur footprints they have measured and use appropriate language to explain which footprint is the longest and shortest in length recording the difference in the appropriate measurement unit.

Students have enjoyed solving worded problems in our problem-solving sessions. The Grade 3’s have been exploring the different steps we need to take to solve worded problems to ensure we understand what the question is asking us.

Over the next fortnight students will be introduced to data. Students will choose their own precise question with narrowed variables to collect data using tally marks. Students will be introduced to different types of graphs including picture graphs, histograms and column graphs exploring the different components needed to create their graph to represent their data.

Inquiry

Over the past fortnight the Grade 3 students have been learning about who makes rules, focusing on how committees are made and how people have expertise to make rules. From there we have learned about how rules are made to be equitable for all people. We investigated how rules in various sports have been changed to ensure that it is inclusive for all people. E.g. Goalball.

Next week, students will be collaborating in small groups to modify the rules of a known game to make it more inclusive.

Wellbeing

We have continued our daily mindfulness activities which the Grade 3 students have been thoroughly enjoying. During Friendology, students learnt and explored four strategies for making new friends and practised applying these to different situations. The four strategies are:

  • Super Introducer
  • Ask and Pass
  • Quick Question
  • Be a Magnet

We discussed different emotions during our Resilience Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) session. Students developed their vocabulary and learnt about identifying how someone is feeling through observing their body language.

Over the next fortnight students will explore key friendship facts to help them have realistic expectations in their friendships.

Exciting times ahead in STEM!

We are thrilled to share some exciting updates about our STEM program! As we continue to inspire and empower our students to explore the wonders of these vital fields, we are reaching out to our wonderful community for support.

Your generosity has always been instrumental in helping us provide enriching educational experiences for our students, and we are once again asking for your support to ensure the success and sustainability of our STEM initiatives.

Your support makes a significant difference to our students' learning opportunities and the success of our STEM program. Here are a few ways you can contribute:

Opportunities to help:

  • Donations of Timber/Wood, appropriate for construction E.g. Billy Cart bases or other small vehicles.
  • If you own or are a part of a company or business who would be willing to sponsor our engineering program.
  • If you have connections with hardware stores/companies, helping us to make contact in order to obtain suitable engineering resources.
  • If you have any household STEM-related materials such as; plastic bottles, milk bottle lids, masking tape, balloons, wooden skewers, plastic or paper cups, unwanted CD’s or DVD’s, Aluminium Foil please drop them off outside the STEM room.
  • Construction Crew: If you're handy with tools and have some basic experience in woodwork or mechanics, we would be delighted to have your help in the upcoming terms to assist with our Grade 6 Science and Engineering program.
