Foundation Music Lessons
Foundation students have been listening and responding to music through scarf dancing.
They have been listening to classical music/folk music which allows them to dance openly and expressively. They were taught to follow the mood of the music by listening for the changes in tempo, pitch and dynamics.
They have also learned scarf dances where they have to listen to specific musical cues such as following the commands of lyrics or tossing their scarf in the air when they hear a specific sound in the music.
Scarf dancing has many developmental benefits:
- Waving, tossing and catching scarves builds gross motor skills
- Actions often involve crossing the midline which benefits cognitive development
- Dancing freely sparks imagination and creative expression
- Following specific cues helps improve auditory processing and ability to follow directions
- Moving the scarf to the beat helps develop children's sense of timing which has been known to help improve literacy skills
- It is a fun and social experience!
