Year 9 & 10 Drama

Year 9/10 ‘Opening Night’ Drama students
On Thursday April 23rd, the class went to Theatre Works at St Kilda to view a new Australian play. It was a dark and twisted version of Cinderella told from the perspective of the Step Mother. Here’s what they thought …
“I found the story very captivating because there was only one actor, and she interpreted other characters very well with voices and body language.”
“Yesterday was an amazing experience going to the play 'Mara' which I absolutely loved. The acting was phenomenal and the play has inspired me to take ideas and put it into my group’s play.”
“The concept of the play was deeply profound, and explored the depth of already established characters from beloved stories that had otherwise been written off as "evil" and "shallow" at a glance. The contradiction of these beliefs through first building up the character's personal background before introducing the familiar part of the story allowed you to first grow used to the voice and perception of the character before looking through that lens at the original story, changing your perception of this all-too-familiar tale entirely.”
“I really enjoyed the play, it was an interesting exploration of the cycle of violence and abuse often felt by women, especially in older times. As well as its thoughts of how women are often villainised for standing up or changing how the world works around them rather than bending and letting it control them.”
“I liked how it was all done by one person, I thought that was really creative and I have never seen a play like that.”
“I was a bit skeptical at first but in the end I really loved this performance. Aurora Kurth played all the characters so well with such energy and enthusiasm and it really brought the whole thing together and went through so many emotions watching it and I really felt something coming out of it. 5 out of 5”
“I enjoyed watching the play 'Mara' because it was inspiring to see just one person performing and singing the whole show. The show really highlighted the actors variety of stage skills from incredible facial expressions and tone of voice to being able to sing such difficult songs.”
“I really enjoyed watching a live play in person, especially the lighting and sound. The journey to and from theatre works was fun too!”
