From the Principal

Welcome to Term 2, 2026

I hope all students and families enjoyed a restful and refreshing break and have returned ready for another busy and rewarding term. As we begin Term 2, I encourage students to reflect on their progress so far, consider the feedback received through conferences and class assessments, and set clear goals for the months ahead. My thanks to our staff for their ongoing commitment to supporting students and maintaining strong communication with families.

Our Music program continues to thrive, last weekend our Music students travelled interstate to participate in the Generations in Jazz Competition. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their talents, collaborate with peers from across the country, and represent our school with pride. We look forward to hearing about their experiences.

We began the term with our Whole School Assembly, it was fantastic to gather as a full school and highlight our school motto ‘to follow the better path’ and our values. Our student leaders played an important role in shaping the assembly, focusing on our Centenary theme and highlighting the importance of making the most of opportunities offered at NHS. Their leadership continues to be a strength of our school, and we thank them for their efforts. This was the first year that we invited our families and Community members to attend the assembly and would like to thank those that attended.

At our recent School Council meeting, we welcomed both new and returning members. I would like to thank all council members for their ongoing support and commitment to the governance and future direction of our school and would like to thank Ms Gaby Chapman for her leadership of the School Council as School Council President and now thank Mr Ben Hubbard for taking on the role. All representation from parents and staff contributes to the vital role of strengthening our community. This issue, Mr Ben Hubbard has provided an update on the recent AEU Industrial action that we hope is resolved soon.

As we continue through our Centenary year, planning is underway for a next exciting event: ‘Back to NHS’ as an opportunity to celebrate the rich history of our school for our current families as well as our Alumni. Please see the article in this edition about the event on Saturday May 16th and pass on information about this event to any alumni.

Thank you to the many families who supported recent community events, including those organised by Friends of Northcote. These events continue to strengthen the connections within our school community, and we look forward to further opportunities this term, including the upcoming Movie Night.

There are two important curriculum-related dates later this term that families should note. In Week 7, we will hold our Course Expo to support students in Years 8 to 11 with their subject selections for 2027. This is an important step in helping students make informed decisions about their pathways. In Week 9, our Assessment and Reporting Day will provide staff with dedicated time to focus on student learning and progress, while VCE students undertaking Unit 3/4 subjects will complete the GAT. Further details will be communicated in our Newsletter.

In this issue you will also find information about our current Respectful Relationships and Sexuality Education programs, and offerings for students and families that are targeted to each year level. We are also offering a parent program that will support families in having conversations at home.

Term 2 is always a time of focus, growth, and opportunity. As heard throughout our Whole School Assembly, we encourage all students to engage fully in their learning, and to take advantage of the many extra-curricular activities on offer.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and I look forward to another successful term.
