Stella Stories English Excursion

Northcote High School was proud to take a group of 20 of our Year 10s to the Stella Stories event which features three authors long-listed for the Stella Prize. This is part of several initiatives in the English Faculty to cultivate a culture of reading and creative writing amongst our students. Thank-you to Victoria Kardamis for accompanying the group and to the students for their enthusiasm.
Student Reflections:
On the 12th of March, we went to The Capitol Theatre for a public interview with three different and authentic writers. Not only was this experience informative, it was fun! It kept me engaged and inspired me to be me more passionate and ‘out there’ with my writing of poetry and songs. Listening to different authors’ experiences and how they wrote books and get inspiration was such an amazing experience and it helped me develop some skills i didn’t know I needed as an author. I would highly recommend this to anyone thinking of going!

I was privileged enough to be part of the group of hand-chosen students, who were accompanied by Ms. Kardamis to go to the STELLA SCHOOLS Story Sessions in Melbourne, taking place in The Capitol in the CBD. There, we got to see three wonderful authors, Evelyn Araluen, Lee Lai and Geraldine Brooks. Each of these authors shared with us their writing and creating process. Something that stood out to us was learning the steps Lee Lai took in creating her graphic novel, Cannon, she shared with us how she constructed her characters.
