Message from

Head of Secondary

Steve Sobey

Already we have kicked off the year running, as we seek to follow Jesus in His calling at Christway College in 2024.

Secondary ‘Meet the Teacher’ night

On Monday 12 February, it was encouraging to see so many secondary parents meet their children’s homeroom and subject teachers. Following a presentation, featuring a video from Mr Damian Higgins reflecting on parental feedback, Ms Kerrie Neophytou reflected on our incredible ranking for the 2023 NAPLAN results as the third highest school in the western region.

Members of the Christway executive team and Heads of Departments also shared what is being offered in 2024. It is so encouraging that there is such a strong partnership between parents and teachers in our Christway family. We look forward to what opportunities and challenges God will bring us in the year ahead.

Secondary Assembly

Due to increased enrolments, we will be alternating our Monday morning student assemblies between primary and secondary year levels. The secondary assemblies will be held from 8.45 to 9.10am on odd weeks. Our next assembly will be on Monday 27th February in Week 5. Along with a devotional message and prayer, regular departmental and calendar updates, staff announcement and student presentations, there will be ‘Fruit of the Spirit’ awards presented on a fortnightly basis. Parents are always welcome to attend and will be invited to attend if awards are being given out to their child(ren).

Student Leadership

Some of our Year 8 and 9 students have been involved in the application process for House Captains and Vice Captains representing each of the four House teams. We will also be electing a student representative for each of the secondary homeroom groups to make up our SRC team. These students will all be announced and presented at our next secondary assembly on Monday 27 February. These SRC representatives and House leaders will join our Secondary Captains; Ananya Malhotra and Havish Bathula, and Vice Captains; Reet Bhavsar and Philip Fourie, to make up our 2024 leadership team. We look forward to seeing our secondary leadership team step up as role models and ambassadors for our college and wider community.

Secondary Camps

Our Years 7 and 8 students had an action-packed camp at Mill Valley Ranch from  5 to  7 February in Week 2. The top highlights of the camp were the horse-riding activity and Chapel songs, ahead of many other team-building activities. It was an excellent opportunity for new students and staff to get to know each other, particularly in their homeroom groups.

As part of our new Year 9 program ‘From Creation to Renewal’ in ‘The year of Challenge', our Year 9 students are looking forward to going to Phillip Island for their Camp in Week 6, from 4 to 8 March.

Senior Years Information Evening

In Term 2,  Wednesday 15 May, we will be holding an Information evening to present an overview of the proposed Senior Years program at Christway College for next year. Students commencing Year 10 in 2025 will have an opportunity to kick-start their VCE studies by undertaking one Unit 1/2 VCE subject, in addition to their Year 10 core and elective subjects. Parents and students will receive more information about this in a letter later this term.

Should you have any further queries about any of these matters, please feel free to contact me via email (steve.sobey@christway.vic.edu.au) or our College office if you would like to make an appointment or phone call.

Warm regards

Mr. Steve Sobey
