This week in Visual Arts, students continued to create a portrait but with a twist –
Foundation students completed a drawing of themselves which they then pasted it onto their piece of water coloured painted paper. Year 1/2 students completed their half-faced portrait style drawing, using dry pastels. Year 3/4 students completed their cubism style portrait using oil pastels. Year 5/6 students completed their inspired by Chuck Close style portrait, where they used soft pastel.

In culture studies last week, students have enjoyed learning about Chinese New Year. The students learned that Chinese New Year is revolved around the lunar moon and that it is celebrated for 15 days. Each year they celebrate with an animal, this year is the dragon. They learnt that Chinese New Year represents luck, happiness, health, fortune. It is about letting go of the past and welcoming the new year. Foundation students were able to create a Chinese dragon kite, where they got to run around and fly them. Year 1/2 students created a Chinese dragon mask, and 3/4 students were able to make red paper lanterns.

Each week all students (each class) participates in one PE session.
This is our third week or PE for the year.
During week 2, first week of PE, students were introduced to the expected behaviours and expectations when participating in PE classes. We played a number of minor games to introduce the expectations which has a key focus on listening to the whistle and instructions and waiting for the magic PE word ‘Go’ before they start following the instructions.
In the second session of PE, we were lucky enough to have members form Southern United Hockey Centre (Kingston Reserve) come out and run a hockey session for each class. They were here to promote the sport of hockey, as well as promote their club. They did have a come and try day at the club, but if you missed it, you are most welcome to go to the club and get a first session for free.
See flyer for more details.
This week in PE, students started a unit of fielding and striking. We used the sport of cricket to develop our hand eye coordination skills of catching, throwing and hitting a ball.
Well done everyone on making such a great and positive start to the new year, I’m looking forward to working with everyone throughout the year.
This year for the first time we have entered students in multiple sports in term 1. These include T20 Blast cricket, Hot Shots Tennis, Teeball and Volleyball. It was so exciting on the first day as we hosted Southmoor, to see so much energy and excitement as we had over 120 students from both schools actively participating in school sports.
We have now had two rounds vs Southmoor and Cheltenham. Many of our students are playing their sport for the first time, so we are still learning the skills and rules but it has been a positive start.
So far, the girls teeball team is undefeated, while the boys and girls tennis teams have both had a win. It has been so great to see the sportsmanship and encouragement of all students both to their school friends and the opposing schools.
Well done everyone and keep up the great effort and sportsmanship.
