Amazing 5/6

Grade 5/6

Term 1 Week 4 – Friday 23rd of February 2024

Message from the Teacher:

We are already close to the middle of term 1 and the students have done a fantastic job settling into their new classes. Every student has a leadership role within their room, their Leader in Me Mission Statements and WIGs are up in their classrooms (please ask them about theirs,) and they have begun their curriculum sessions.

We are placing a lot of emphasis this term about developing the routines of a successful classroom. This involves creating and sticking to a morning routine, transitioning quietly and neatly between lessons and lining up at the end of recess and lunch. With this in mind, we are really pushing for students to be ready to go and at school by 8:50. This allows them to grab a drink, go to the toilet and catch up with a friend before the day starts, rather than during class time. We appreciate your support to ensure that they are arriving on time.

We have a couple of big sporting events coming up this term, with the House Cross Country in Week 9 and the Summer Sports Lightning Premiership in Week 8. Please keep an eye on Compass for permission forms.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact your classroom teacher with any queries, we will attempt to reply within 48 hours.

 Learning intentions:

Literacy: Literacy over the next two weeks will be focusing on creating narrative and persuasive pieces as practice before NAPLAN in week 7 and 8. We will be focusing on sentence structure and the expected features of each text type.

We have also begun our new spelling program, focusing on the common bases for words and how we add prefixes and suffixes to add meaning.

Mathematics: We have started our focus groups for maths, having identified areas and building the groups based on the specific needs of each student, these groups will run unto after NAPLAN in week 8. The groups have a focus around the value of numbers and identifying key characteristics of whole and decimal numbers.

What have we been up to?

Julia and Ciara – 5/6C

Literacy- We are learning about the 3 types of text persuasive, informative and narrative. We looked at different signs around the school to find their purpose, audience and whether it was informative, persuasive or narrative.

For Morphene Lexicon – We are learning the prefix re for example remote, repellant and  relax.

Maths – The 3-6 classes are split into different classes to get help on what they need. Some classes are learning about prime, squared, triangular and composite numbers. Other groups are learning about expanding numbers eg 46,809 – 40,000, 6,000 , 800 , 0 and 9 ones.

We had a first inquiry lesson which was about the first fleet. We found out that the English sent prisoners to Australia because they were too many people in the English jails including children of our age and younger. The laws were very harsh and stealing one loaf of bread could get you sent to jail where they could die because of the conditions. They couldn’t go to their colonies in America because the Americans kicked them out. Did you know the first fleet took almost one year to arrive to Australia by boat?

Important reminders

  • All students need to wear a school hat, bucket or wide brim hat (NO CAPS), during recess and lunch
