Years 7 to 11 Mario Kart Competition
On 25 October, during our Friday school assembly, we held our annual Mario Kart competition. Years 7 to 11 students were on the edge of their seats as the four Houses battled it out for the title of reigning champion. Everyone was eager to see the outcome of the race.
Year 11 student Declan McManamny claimed first place, securing a well-earned victory for Burman. In the staff race, Mr Schmidt took the win, though Ms Valentine, Mr Troitzky, and Ms Low held their own as well. It was a great assembly, and several students shared with me afterward how much they enjoyed the session.
Years 9 to 11 Live FM Broadcasting Workshop
Recently, the Year 9 leaders, along with a select group of Years 10 and 11 Media students, had the privilege of working with Ralph Barba from LIVE FM. They spent the day learning how to navigate live radio and conduct engaging conversations with guests for the audience.
Lydia Allison, Year 9
Interviewing such influential leaders was a transformative experience. Under Ralph Barba’s expert guidance, I understood that I need to tap into my curiosity and ask the right type of questions to receive the best answers.
Listening to our guests share their leadership journeys felt nerve-wracking at times, but I also enjoyed the experience. Thanks to the advice given by Dean Cohen and Rob French, I feel ready to take on new challenges.
Stepping outside my comfort zone to be on live radio was exhilarating, and I can whole-heartedly say that I’ve gained so much from this invaluable experience!
Jock McKenzie, Year 10
I learned many skills related to radio and podcasting, such as how to keep audiences engaged and the differences between the two formats. Experiencing the full setup was fantastic, and it's something I hope to do again in the future.
Daniel Vanston, Year 11
As part of our Live FM workshop, we were joined by former School Captain Charan Naidoo, Flying Fox founder Dean Cohen, Kilvington Chair of the Board Sarah McSwiney, Principal Rob French, Community Service Program Director Jacqui Goldenberg, and entrepreneur Matt Nation, Director of Nation Partners. Each guest shared insights into their leadership journeys and how it shapes their work across various fields.
Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to develop technical skills in broadcasting and gain valuable perspectives on leadership. Hearing how each guest applies leadership in their roles helped us understand how this trait can be applied in different aspects of life, not just at school.
We left the workshop feeling more confident in our ability to engage in meaningful conversations and excited to apply these lessons in our own lives and within the school community.
Year 11 ISV Film Competition Showcase
Elijah Ignasiak, Year 11
This year, Kilvington was proudly represented at the Independent Schools Victoria (ISV) Film Festival, a unique event that gives students from across Victoria the opportunity to showcase their filmmaking abilities.
A Year 11 group from our school took on the challenge and submitted their film, Letters From Doug. We were ecstatic to learn that Letters From Doug was selected as one of four finalists from a lineup of over 100 films.
The showcase took place on October 29 at ACMI in the city. As we settled into our seats and the tension began to rise, the lights dimmed and the screen illuminated. For the next two hours, the cinema was filled with laughter, silence, and an atmosphere of competitive curiosity—who would win? Each film was unique in its own right, whether in style, story or its emotional impact on the audience. Needless to say, the competition was fierce.
While Letters From Doug didn’t win the Judge’s Choice Award, all hope was not lost. A few days after the festival, we were thrilled to receive a high commendation for our work. We’re already plotting our next magnum opus!
