Year 1 Lego Masters
Esther Linivker, Kirsty Marwood and Francis McGinley, Year 1 Teachers
The Year 1 students recently invited their families to School to share in their learning, creativity and hard work. Over the semester, students investigated natural, managed and constructed features within our local environment. Building on this, we explored our school community by examining the observable features of each building through photos and multiple visits to different areas of the School.
Working in small groups or pairs, students then used Lego to create models of various buildings or areas of Kilvington. These creations were thoughtfully planned, carefully constructed and combined into a vibrant display. The results were truly impressive!
The excitement continued with a Family Building Challenge. Students and their parents were tasked with designing and building a new feature to enhance our school environment. The competitive spirit was electric, and the creativity was boundless, with ideas ranging from pools and wellness centres to a helipad complete with a Kilvington helicopter.
Our 'Lego Master,' Mr Collins, had the difficult task of selecting just three winners. Trophies were awarded to Milla's Well-Being Treehouse, Nalini's Science Rocket and Evan's Sustainability Windmill. Every participant should be incredibly proud of their creativity and effort!
We want to thank all the families who came to join us for this event, and we hope you all had as much fun as we did! The Year 1 teachers are so proud of what we achieved through teamwork, communication and attention to detail.
If you’d like to see our Lego creations, please visit the Junior School reception, where they are on display.
Annual School Sustainability Festival
Ava Cheong, Year 6, Junior Sustainability Leader
Last term, select students from Years 2 to 6 had the chance to attend the 19th Annual School Sustainability Festival, held at St Kilda Town Hall. Organised by the Port Phillip EcoCentre, the festival brought together students from across Port Phillip, Bayside, Stonnington, and Glen Eira to showcase and celebrate environmental initiatives and sustainability projects.
Kilvington students contributed by hosting our own hands-on activity, From Small Things, Big Things Grow. We set up a seed-planting station where students could plant their own seeds to take home. It was great to see everyone excited to get their hands dirty, and we enjoyed sharing with them the importance of growing plants and supporting biodiversity.
The festival was filled with other unique and creative activities as well. We joined in an eco-friendly bubble activity, which used bubbles instead of balloons as a fun, sustainable way to celebrate. This activity was a brilliant reminder of the importance of choosing sustainable alternatives, even in small ways. Other students also hosted workshops, showcasing everything from composting and waste reduction to water conservation.
There was also an awards ceremony, where schools were recognised for their commitment to sustainability. Arianna Williams, Tom Lyng and I were honoured to receive an award based on our efforts to make a difference. It was inspiring to see so many students and schools being celebrated for their efforts to also make a difference.
In the end, the day was not only educational but also empowering, reminding us all of our roles as future environmental leaders.
Ethics Olympiad Competition
Tania Whitehead, Talent Development and Enrichment Coordinator
I am thrilled to share the results from the recent 2024 Ethics Olympiad competition.
The Ethics Olympiad is a unique national competition where students across dozens of schools tackle real-life ethical issues. This year, our Years 8 and 9 participants were challenged with a range of ethical dilemmas, from AI in schools to the environmental sustainability of ‘fast fashion’.
A huge congratulations to our Years 8 to 9 Kilvington Blue ‘eth-letes’, who won Gold, fending off competition from a barrage of Australian independent schools!
This outstanding achievement has qualified them for the International Final, which will take place on February 19, 2025. Team members Liam Eliav, Sasha Polikushin, Ethan Cohen and Alex Moore demonstrated exceptional skill, teamwork and dedication throughout the competition.
In addition, congratulations to our Year 8 Team, Kilvington Grey, who earned an Honourable Mention. This is a fantastic accomplishment! The Grey Team members are Hao Kun Sun, Cam Leighton, Ayaan Gupta and Will Walsh.
Well done to both teams!
