The value of camp experiences
Terms 3 and 4 have been exceptionally busy, with students and staff participating in various trips both within Victoria and interstate.
I recently attended one of the interstate trips—the Year 6 five-day excursion to Canberra. While the main focus was on exploring the educational aspects of our capital, the trip also highlighted other important benefits for students.
For some, participating in experiences away from the classroom—and away from their families—can be daunting. Camps and other trips allow students to immerse themselves in these experiences, supported by staff and peers. These opportunities are vital for building essential life skills such as independence and resilience.
Throughout the week, I observed many of these life skills beginning to develop. Students had to follow instructions, such as when we were boarding the plane—usually done with parents, but now with 46 peers and six teachers! They also packed their backpacks each day, cooperated with friends, navigated the challenges of being in each other’s company day and night, and solved various problems (such as, 'How will I fit the items I purchased at Questacon back into my suitcase?').
Over the week, the Year 6 students rose to these challenges, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they represented themselves and our school at significant places like Parliament House, the War Memorial, and Government House.
Parents play an integral role in preparing their child for school trips and camps. It’s helpful to start conversations early, highlighting the adventure and fun awaiting them to build excitement. It’s equally important to acknowledge and normalize any nerves they may feel about going away.
Framing challenges as growth opportunities can be effective—for example, by openly discussing that some tough moments may arise, how they might manage these, and who they can seek support from if needed.
Depending on the camp or trip, encourage openness to trying new things. Finally, pack together. Review the packing list to ensure everything is included, especially important for outdoor camps.

World Teachers' Day Australia
We recently celebrated World Teachers' Day Australia with morning tea and a small gift for all staff. It was a lovely opportunity to recognise and celebrate the invaluable role teachers and staff play in shaping the future.
