Innovators in Action: Tackling the Power of Natural Disasters in 5/6

Over the past few weeks, our brilliant Grade 5/6 students have immersed themselves in a powerful Science inquiry focused on major natural disasters—earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and floods. Through deep exploration, hands-on investigations and engaging research, students uncovered how these events occur and the profound impact they can have on people and places. They were especially fascinated to discover the chain reactions between disasters, such as how earthquakes can trigger tsunamis or how extreme rainfall can lead to flash flooding.

As part of their learning journey, students took on the challenge of becoming inventors and problem-solvers. With creativity, curiosity and a genuine desire to make a difference, they designed, trialled and refined innovative prototypes aimed at protecting people from the effects of natural disasters. From flood barriers and tsunami-resistant shelters to volcanic ash filters and early-warning systems, the ideas and final products were nothing short of inspiring!

Throughout the project, every student demonstrated outstanding resilience, persistence, collaboration and a growth mindset. They asked thoughtful questions, experimented with different materials, revised their designs, and proudly shared their inventions with the school community. The commitment shown by each learner has been a testament to the passion and determination within our 5/6 cohort. We are incredibly proud of the hard work, teamwork and critical thinking that went into this unit. Well done to all students for using their minds to protect humankind! We are extremely grateful to all the students and staff who provided valuable feedback at the expo.

In addition, a big shout out to  to the Grade 5/6 teaching team for supporting our magnificent students every step of the way throughout this rich learning experience.
