Book Review by Isabella
Isabella recommended the book Netball Dreams by Thalia Kalkipsakis. It is an adventure book based at the netball courts. The main characters Alex, Becky, Callum, Mickey, Brad, Angie and Claire hang out at the netball courts and do fun activities. The plot is about Alex training at netball and thinks she is not good enough to play. Her friends support her about the situation at the courts. She would recommend the book to Grade 3-6 students and rates it 4.5/5 stars.
Foundation
Perceptual Motor Program – or ‘PMP’ – is a special weekly class for Foundation students, where we practise gross-motor skills, fine-motor skills, balance, co-ordination and spatial awareness. This week in PMP, we were lucky to have Ella lead the class for a ballet-themed session. Students learnt that a female dancer is called a ‘ballerina’ and a male dancer is a ‘ballerino’. We learnt some French words like plie and port de bras, and the ballet movements that these terms describe. We noticed the different sensations in our bodies as we warmed up and cooled down, and marvelled at Ella’s collection of medals, trophies and photos at the end of the session. Thanks Ella, for generously sharing your expertise with the Foundation class!
Music & Movement
Students have been rehearsing mini drama performances in Music and Movement, and today was the big day to finally perform these on the big stage in the wellbeing room! We then finished the lesson with our two narrators, Eve and Audrey reading the class a picture book.
Weekly Wrap Year 1 & 2
In Literacy, our Year 1 and 2 students have been exploring a variety of phonics activities. In Year 1, we have been learning about the ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ sounds, found in words like coin and boy. Students have been identifying these sounds in their reading and using them in their writing through interactive activities on their mini whiteboards. Year 2 students have been focusing on the alternate pronunciation of ‘ch’ as /k/, as seen in words like school and chorus. They've enjoyed investigating the origins of these tricky words and sorting them into sound categories to build their understanding.
Both year levels have also been busy planning and drafting their Hot Task writing for our Action Narrative unit. The students have been learning to add interest and excitement to their writing by using the following techniques: focusing on the action with a sentence of 3, choosing verbs that show emotion, adding detail to how a character moves by using adverbs and using onomatopoeia to interrupt and interject, bringing sound and surprise to their stories. It’s been a joy to watch their creative ideas come to life as they craft imaginative and engaging narratives.
