                    Our Learning - Weeks 10 & 11

English

In the final two weeks of Term 2, students have been revising key skills across spelling, reading, and writing. In Week 10, they have been reviewing this term’s spelling rules and learning how to identify emotive language in texts, exploring how it supports the author’s opinion. Students have also been planning a new persuasive writing piece by researching their chosen topic and revising their writing for clarity and impact.

In Week 11, students will focus on publishing their persuasive texts and revising key reading skills, including summarising, answering literal and inferential questions, and comparing different types of texts. To finish the term, students will compare the book The One and Only Ivan with its film adaptation, reflecting on how stories can be told in different ways.

Maths

In Week 10, students wrapped up their unit on time. They’ve been learning to tell the time to the nearest minute, calculate durations using daily timetables, and connect time concepts with fractions and angles. Students have also created their own visual clocks to support their understanding of time.

In Week 11, we move into our new unit on Area and Perimeter. Students will explore how to measure and calculate the perimeter and area of rectangles and composite shapes. They will apply their knowledge through fun hands-on tasks like designing their name using grid paper and creating scaled floorplans for a dream house.

SEL

In Week 10, students explored the concept of gender stereotypes by examining the traditional roles of men and women in fairy tales. Through class discussions and group activities, they reflected on how stereotypes are formed, what they might miss out on by copying others, and how all children should feel free to pursue their interests—regardless of gender.

In Week 11, students will learn about gender pressure and how it can influence the way people express themselves. They will practise recognising and responding to gender-based comments or expectations from peers and explore ways to show respect for everyone’s individual interests and identities.

Humanities

In Week 10, students have been exploring how and why governments create budgets. Learning how money is allocated to different services and considering the importance of budgeting when making decisions in their own council projects.

In Week 11, students will finalise their council projects by rehearsing their presentations and ensuring they meet all the rubric criteria. To conclude the unit, students will present their projects to the class and practise giving and receiving constructive feedback from their peers.

Hillsmeade Heros!!!

Congratulations to the students recognised this fortnight for demonstrating Hillsmeade’s core values of Kindness, Respect, and Resilience. We are proud of your efforts and the positive example you set for others.

As Term 2 comes to an end, the holidays are a great opportunity for students to rest, recharge, and reflect on all they’ve achieved this semester. While there is no set homework over the break, we encourage students to continue reading regularly and practise their times tables to keep their skills sharp. Teachers will only check diaries if students have anything recorded.

Looking ahead to Term 3, we have an exciting 9 week term planned—including Year 4 camp! To help us finalise numbers, please log in to Compass and provide consent to indicate whether your child will be attending.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We wish all our Year 4 families a safe and restful holiday break!
