Year 3 Update

Our Learning - Weeks 10 & 11
English
In English, students are learning how to write their own procedures using clear and structured language. They are also exploring procedural picture storybooks to identify the sequence of steps and how these are presented in texts. As part of our reading focus, students are practising comprehension strategies using Think Marks to record their thoughts, make predictions, and ask questions while reading. We are also developing fluency and expression through Reader’s Theatre performances.
Maths
In Maths, students are developing their understanding of time by learning to read both analogue and digital clocks. They are exploring formal units of time, including seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks. Students are also learning how a 24-hour day is divided into 12 hours of ‘am’ and 12 hours of ‘pm’, and what these terms mean. They are focusing on identifying the difference between the hour and minute hands on an analogue clock and are practising how to tell the time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour and minute. Students are also learning how to accurately record time in both analogue and digital formats.
Inquiry
Our topic this term is Geography.
In Inquiry, students are learning more about our country, Australia. Each student is choosing an Australian state or territory to investigate and will be creating a PowerPoint presentation to share their findings. As part of this project, students are learning how to follow a research rubric, gather relevant information and present their ideas clearly and confidently.
Social and Emotional Learning
In SEL, students have been learning to recognise and challenge stereotypes by exploring how characters are represented in stories. They are developing their understanding of fairness, individuality and the importance of respecting people’s choices, no matter their gender. Through group activities and discussion, students are thinking critically about the messages they see in books, media and everyday life, and reflecting on how these can shape the way we see ourselves and others.
News and reminders
Drink bottles:
Please remember to bring a drink bottle to school every day. It saves disruption to your child's learning when this is accessible within the room. They are able to fill up their bottles in a nearby classroom.
Homework:
Students are encouraged to complete one or two activities from the homework grid each week for the rest of the term. Once an activity is completed, they just need to cross it off and write the date in the box so teachers can keep track of what’s been done.
Reading continues to be an important part of homework, and we encourage students to read for at least 10 minutes on 3 to 4 nights each week.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.
Year 3 - Healesville Excursion:
On Friday 1st August, Year 3 students will visit Healesville Sanctuary to participate in the Aboriginal Cultures and Country experience. This program will explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, the seven seasons of the Kulin Nation and how seasonal changes affect living things.
